Diane removes a poster |
Diane is taking down one of the posters, convinced that Jason will not be coming back.
Kelly hoped she could slip away unnoticed |
As Kelly leaves the deli, she hopes that Diane has not seen her, but Diane shouts, “Kelly, there’s no point hiding – Ifan’s going tomorrow. Are you going to come with us? I’m sure Ifan would want you there.”
"I don't want big emotional goodbyes" |
“I don’t want big emotional goodbyes – it’s easier for everyone this way,” Kelly replies.
“For you, perhaps,” points out Diane, “You’ve refused to say goodbye to Jason and now Ifan.”
Kelly crosses the road . . . |
Kelly simply walks across the road and through the alley.
. . . into the alley |
Jinx is approaching as Dani comes out of the shop; “I was on my way to see you,” he says.
"I've been busy" |
She protests that she has been busy
"How are things at home?" |
and when asked how things are at home, she reports that Seren is complaining that she is bored, Gabs is hogging the telly – and Gwern . . .
"I haven't managed to get through to Gwern yet" |
she has not yet managed to get through to him.
“I wanted to spend some quality time with him today, but I get one answer when I ask what he wants to do – ‘don’t know’! I just want him to talk to me.”
Jinx suggests that perhaps she could go for a walk with him, as sometimes an activity can help someone start to talk.
"It might be worth a try" |
Dani thinks that it may be worth a try.
Griffiths is still fixated on that photo |
Griffiths is sitting in the deli, looking intently at a photograph,
"No we don't lease the land from anyone" |
Eileen informs Hywel, “No, we don’t lease the land from anyone – we own the fields, – every one.” Sioned brings him his coffee,
"I've seen better colour on a sheep" |
and Eileen tells her, disparagingly, “I’ve seen better colour on a sheep – go home – you’re not fit to be here.”
“What if it isn’t a water infection?” Sioned worries; her mother says that she used to get them all the time and that there is some Cranberry juice in the fridge, which she should drink.
"Yes, all right, Mam" |
Sioned follows instructions.
"Do you have a current map of Cwmderi?" |
Hywel goes over to Griffiths and asks, “Ieuan, you don't have a current map of Cwmderi, do you?” but he is completely ignored.
"When do you think this was taken?" |
Griffiths shows him the photograph; “When do you think this was taken?” Hywel guesses at the 1960s,
"Exactly nine months before I was born . . ." |
and is told, “November 1962 – exactly nine months before I was born – yes, it’s a photograph of my parents –
". . . I think Brynmor's my father" |
“I think Brynmor is my father.”
"You're not serious?" |
Hywel cannot believe his ears.
"How about a meal in the Deri later?" |
Jinx asks Dani if she fancies a meal in the Deri later; “A chance for us to have some quality time together – and don’t you dare say ‘don’t know’!”
"I'll see you about two" |
She agrees and they will meet there at around 2 o’clock; “It will be a chance to celebrate your new job,” he adds,
"I rejected the job" |
but she advises that she has rejected the job because she has to be there for Gwern. She will see him later.
"Have you raised it with Brynmor?" |
Hywel asks if Ieuan has raised the matter with Brynmor.
"He looked like 'the poodle that pinched the peanuts'!" |
“He denied it, but you could tell by his face – he looked like ‘the poodle that had pinched the peanuts’, as Gran used to say.”
"There's a chance it is your father" |
“But there’s a chance that your father is your biological father,” Hywel reminds him and Ieuan recalls that he was very young when he lost his father.
"And look at me now! |
“He always seemed so far away – perhaps he knew about this.” Hywel is surprised that nobody said anything; “And look at me now,” sighs Ieuan, “No family worth mentioning – Melanie barely answers the phone. Lauren’s always busy – who knows what Indeg’s up to?”
Brynmor is staring at him |
Then he looks up from his coffee and sees Brynmor approaching through the alley; after a moment staring at each other, Brynmor walks away
"There's no denying he looks guilty" |
and Hywel maintains, “There’s no denying he looks guilty.”
Sioned tries to make a phone call |
Home at Penrhewl, Sioned finds some tablets in a drawer and is trying to phone someone, without success.
Then she feels a sudden pain |
Then she feels a pain and fears the worst; picking up her phone again, she dials a number.
"Can I speak to Dr Dan Morris?" |
“Hello, can I speak to Dr Dan Morris, please?”
Meanwhile in the deli, Eileen is trying to contact Sioned; “Answer the phone, girl!” she snarls.
Sani and Gwern enter the deli . . . |
Dani and Gwern come in
. . . as Eileen wants to check on Sioned |
and Eileen enquires, “Have you seen DJ? I want him to look after this place – I missed a call from Sioned – and now she’s not answering. I sent her home because she wasn’t well and I didn’t realise my phone was on silent.”
"I've got a Food Hygiene Certificate" |
Gwern volunteers to look after the place; “Dani has run the Deri and I’ve got a Food Hygiene Certificate.” Eileen welcomes the help, remarking that she was going to ask Meleri, but she is on holiday.
"We'll be fine" |
Dani encourages her to go and check on Sioned; “We’ll be fine!”
"Food Hygiene Certificate?" |
As Eileen hurries out of the door, Dani is sceptical about this ‘Food Hygiene Certificate’.
Kelly has escaped to the Deri |
In the Deri, Diane approaches Kelly; “I’ve tried packing Ifan’s stuff –
"I don't have a clue what he wants to take with him . . ." |
“I don’t have a clue what he wants to take with him – you know all that.
". . . can't you be there to support him?" |
“Can’t you be there to support him when he is leaving his community?”
"It's not like he's coming back" |
“Just pack what you want – it’s not like he’s coming back,” Kelly replies.
Dr Dan is quickly on the scene |
Dr Dan Morris appears at the farmhouse, bringing some tablets which he hopes will sort Sioned out; “And they’ll do a better job than cranberry juice – you’re looking better already.”
Sioned says that will please her mother and Dan offers to make her a cup of tea.
"It's nice to have an excuse to see you again . . ." |
“It’s nice to have an excuse to see you again –
". . . I'm so sorry about what happened last week" |
“I’m so sorry about what happened last week with DJ.”
"DJ doesn't know me" |
Dan can understand that, as DJ does not know him and he is not from around here.
"I'm surprised at you letting him down like this!" |
Diane continues, “I’m surprised at you letting him down like this – do you have any idea how selfish you’re being? You’re not the only one suffering!”
"It's different for you, Diane . . ." |
Kelly answers, “The thing is, Diane, it’s different for you – you’re going to be in his life for ever, ’cos you’re his Mam-gu. I’m –
". . . what's the rôle of an ex-stepmother?" |
“I mean what’s the rôle of an ‘ex-stepmother’? I am not the biological parent, so when it comes down to it, that’s what counts – simple as!”
"If Hywel Llywelyn buys a Flymo . . ." |
Sioned is chatting to Dan; “Put it this way – if Hywel Llywelyn buys a Flymo in the morning, Dai Sgaffalde will have a sit-down mower by the afternoon. Honestly, if you want to hear about everyone, go to the Deri.”
"I don't think you've met them yet" |
He enquires who is running the Deri at the moment and is informed, “Kath and Cassie – but I don’t think you’ve met them yet.”
He already knows the names, Kath Jones and Cassie Morris,
Then Eileen walks in |
and at that moment Eileen returns;
"Dr Morris, what are you doing here?" |
“Dr Morris, what are you doing here?” she demands
Sioned looks sheepish |
and Sioned looks sheepish.
"Sara has promised you can see him" |
“Sara has promised you can see him,” Diane goes on,
"And how long will that last?" |
but Kelly suspects that will be at the beginning, but then what? He will forget about her because he has a new family.
"Do you think it's that easy to forget about you?" |
“Do you think it’s that easy to forget about you?” asks Diane, “Ifan’s been forced to live without his mother for years – you filled that gap – and more. And now he has to live without his father –
"Don't force him to live without you as well" |
“don’t force him to live without you as well.”
Dani and Gwern seem to be coping well in the deli; “Look at you – dab hand!” says Dani,
"I'm only sticking things in bread" |
but he points out that he is only sticking things in bread. “No, you’re like a real pro, actually,” she tells him and he reveals that he learnt a few things while he was away.
"I have no idea what it was like" |
“Listen, I don’t want to hassle you deliberately, but I have no idea what it was like,” she adds.
"You have to be careful" |
He maintains that it was ‘all right’, but you have to be careful – and tough.
"Did anyone hurt you?" |
She wonders if anyone hurt him.
“My first week – they see you coming. If you looked at someone at the wrong time – I snapped, but I learned how things were after that.
"Once I got a job in the kitchen . . ." |
But once I got a job in the kitchen, I could keep my head down – I had a purpose.”
"So that's where you learned to cook" |
Dani can see that is where he learned to cook, and he says that time went past more quickly then.
"We're not letting you go again" |
“Well, you’re home now with your family – and we’re not letting you go again"
Gwern actually smiles |
“do you hear?” she assures him.
Jinx comes in |
Jinx comes in and is surprised to see who is staffing the deli;
"Just helping Eileen" |
“Just helping Eileen,” Dani tells him, and he asks for a cup of tea,
"Do I get it on the house?" |
wondering if he gets it on the house because he knows the barista.
"I think I'm getting through to him" |
This is unsuccessful, but he is informed, “Do you know what? I think I'm getting through to him. He’s started to talk, but it’s hard for him.”
"We could have lunch here instead" |
Jinx suggests that they could have lunch there instead,
Gwern is listening |
and we can see that Gwern is listening from the kitchen.
"It would be better if you're out of his orbit" |
“Don’t take this the wrong way, but perhaps it would be better if you’re out of his orbit,” Dani replies.
"I'll see you later, Dani" |
Jinx is looking forward to seeing her later.
Then Gwern emerges from the kitchen to ask if there are any more orders
"Right – OK, boss!" |
and is told that they need one more ham salad.
A rather frosty atmosphere at Penrhewl |
As they sit rather awkwardly around the kitchen table at Penrhewl,
"I had better be going" |
Dan decides that he should go, and Eileen rather pointedly tells Sioned that she ought to be resting. Dan advises Sioned that she should be drinking plenty of water and leaves the house.
"A home visit for a water infection?" |
“Is it normal for a doctor to make a home visit for a water infection?” enquires Eileen. Sioned answers that he offered to take her to get the antibiotics.
"You can't have your personal doctor on speed dial" |
“You can’t have your personal doctor on speed dial, Sioned!” she is reprimanded, “It doesn’t work like that.”
"If pregnant, consult your doctor" |
Sioned picks up the packet and shows her mother, “It says here, if pregnant, consult your doctor – so what have I done wrong?” Eileen complains that she has gone private and demands who is going to pay for it.
“DJ is going to help out,” is Sioned’s terse reply,
"That was for the scans" |
but her mother maintains that was for the scans, not for the antibiotics.
“Perhaps you should keep Dr Morris at arm’s length from now on,” Eileen recommends, “Keep it as a professional relationship.”
"There's nothing going on" |
“There’s nothing going on, if that’s what you’re suggesting – we’re friends,” insists Sioned,
Eileen thinks otherwise |
but her mother can see that is not the case.
"I've been a selfish cow, haven't I" |
Kelly now realises, “I’ve been a proper selfish cow, haven’t I?” Diane says that everyone deals with loss in their own way, but if Kelly wants to be part of his life, she has to make the effort.
"It would mean the world to Ifan if you came with us" |
“It would mean the world to Ifan if you came with us tomorrow.”
"Lego and Terrance the Tedi" |
Kelly suggests, concerning the packing, only the essentials are needed; “He’ll want his Lego and Terrance the Tedi.
"This is not goodbye, Kelly" |
Diane reminds her that this is not goodbye – and she should remember that.
"It depends on Sara, doesn't it?" |
“It depends on Sara, doesn’t it? Whether she sticks to her word or not,” says Kelly, as she gets up and leaves the Deri.
Brynmor comes visiting |
Griffiths is in the kitchen of his mothers house, with a small Christmas cactus on the windowsill, when Brynmor comes to see him.
"I haven't been honest with you" |
“Forgive me . . . I haven’t been honest with you,” he says, “And I think it’s time you were told the truth.”
Ieuan waits for confirmation |
Ieuan imagines that it will be what he suspected.
Dan looks at the licensees' names |
Dan Morris stands outside the Deri, looking up at the names of the licensees above the door, then he turns and walks away.
Britt thanks them for their help |
Eileen is now back at the deli; it appears that Dani and Gwern have enjoyed their stint behind the counter. Eileen reports that she just needs to keep an eye on Sioned,
"Oh, Eileen" |
then notices Dan who is approaching.
"Sorry that Sioned keeps phoning you" |
“I’m glad I’ve seen you – I’m sorry that Sioned keeps phoning you. It’s not all right and I’ve told her this dependency on you isn’t healthy.
"No problem at all" |
“Between you and me, I think she’s comforted by having a medical person nearby.
"She won't take any notice of me" |
“No matter what I say, she takes no notice, unless it comes from a doctor.”
"That's understandable" |
Dan replies that it is understandable after everything she has gone through.
"I don't want you to leave your work" |
“I don’t want you to leave your work because of her,” Eileen continues, rather more authoritatively,
"It's no bother, honestly" |
but he insists that it is no bother at all.
"In case you get the wrong impression" |
“I wanted to make it clear, in case you get the wrong impression,” she states and he assures her that he does not see Sioned in that sort of way; they are friends.
"You can get in touch any time" |
He gives his card to Eileen; “This is my personal number – if anything comes up, you can get in touch any time – and give it to Sioned, too, so she doesn’t have to phone the hospital.
"You can't put a price on peace of mind" |
“You can’t put a price on peace of mind.” Eileen does not look very impressed.
Dani could not get haricots verts |
Dani arrives back at number 9, hoping that she has got everything; “Except for the ‘haricots verts’, but I’m sure we’ve got frozen peas. So what’s on the menu?”
Gwern announces he is going to cook ‘sweet potato quesadilla’ – “Mexican.” Dani will expect him to cook every night now.
"Where are the shallots? These are onions" |
He asks where are the shallots, as what he is holding are onions.
"You said they were small onions" |
“You said that shallots were small onions – and they’re small,” she protests; he wonders how she has got to her age without knowing what shallots are.
"Food will be ready in half an hour" |
She is about to leave again, so he warns that food will be ready in half an hour.
"I wish Eunice has been straight with you from the start" |
“I wish that Eunice had been straight with you from the start – I spent a lot of time with her during that period,” says Brynmor, “A lot of trips away with the council – yes, we had a lot of fun.
"But someone else attended those council trips . . ." |
“But someone else attended those council trips, too – it wasn’t any of my business, but it was obvious that something was going on.”
". . . he's not with us any more . . ." |
Ieuan is impatiently waiting to get to the important part as Brynmor continues, “I’m afraid he’s not with us any more –
". . . but his son's around the place" |
“but his son’s around the place.”
"Yes – and who is that?" |
Ieuan is now even more intrigued.
Hywel is marking a map of Cwmderi |
Hywel is in the Deri, poring over a map of Cwmderi (which we would all surely like to see) and marking it with a yellow highlighter.
"Good grief!" |
“Good grief!” he mutters.
"Can we do this meal another time?" |
Dani arrives, apologising that she lost track of time; now Jinx is disappointed that she wants to do this meal at another time. “Gwern – I’m seeing a difference in him – it’s thanks to you, for the advice. He’s cooking for me now.”
"Should I come over?" |
Jinx enquires whether he should come over,
"Not this time" |
but is told, “Not this time.” Then he wants her to stay for one drink, but she is anxious to get back; “If things carry on like this, perhaps it won’t be too long before you can come home.”
Hywel goes to get another pint from Geraint |
He is rather downcast and nearby Hywel goes over to the bar for another pint.
"All right, Jinx?" |
He asks if Jinx is all right;
"I've been better" |
the answer is, “I’ve been better.”
"Dan Llywelyn?" |
Ieuan gasps, “Dan Llywelyn?”
"Yes" |
and Brynmor nods his head in agreement.
"Well, that means Hywel . . ." |
“Well, that means Hywel . . .”
"Is your brother" |
Brynmor completes the sentence for him, “Is your brother.”
