"Phone for an ambulance now!" |
Mathew orders Howard to call for an ambulance; “Phone for one now –she’s pregnant!” he exclaims, “She needs to go to hospital!” while he frantically tries to remove the debris from Ffion, who is groaning.
"I inherited those shares from Dad" |
Hywel is explaining to Griffiths, “I inherited those shares after Dad died – the company must have changed its name and he must have known that this was on the cards.”
Ieuan comments that he had a good business brain,
"Just like his sons" |
“Just like his sons!” Hywel demands if he is going to take this seriously, but Ieuan simply goes on that both of them are cut from the same cloth.
He is getting on Hywel's nerves |
Hywel does not agree with that,
"There's only one way to be sure" |
so is bluntly told, “There’s only one way to be sure – a DNA test.”
"I'm fed up with your nonsense!" |
This is too much for Hywel, who orders his so-called ‘brother’ out of the house; “I’m fed up with your nonsense!” Despite Ieuan’s protestations that they would then have confirmation, one way or the other,
"Go!" |
he shouts, “Go!” and Ieuan thinks it wise to do so.
"Fancy going to the cinema?" |
As they eat their breakfast at Y Felin, Cai wonders if Lleucu fancies going to see something at the cinema, but she does not reply. “Or we could go for a walk, if you like,” he adds,
"What's wrong, Lleucu?" |
then asks what is wrong.
"Maes B was amazing – but . . ." |
“Well, Maes B at the Eisteddfod was amazing last week because I was with all my friends – but now they’ve gone back to North Wales and they’re having a brilliant time together – I’m stuck here with you – no offence. The girls are going camping to Aberdaron tonight – and they didn’t even ask if I wanted to go.”
"It's a bit far for you" |
Her father replies, “Do you blame them? It’s a bit far for you.” She tells him that is not the point,
"I'm going for a walk" |
picks up her coat and leaves the house; she is going for walk, but does not want her father’s company.
Where can I get hold of a copy of that map? |
Hywel is poring over the map of Cwmderi;
"They own the two farms and the rugby club as well" |
“Here’s Maes-y-Deri, and the High Street – Quantum Hydro Works own the two farms and the rugby club as well. Their leases expire at the end of the year,” he informs Diane, as they sit at a table in the Deri.
"That doesn't mean they want to drown the valley" |
“That doesn’t mean the company wants to drown the valley,” she remarks, but he points out that it is their land,
"They can do what they want with it" |
so they can do what they want with it. “Not without the council’s permission,” Diane insists.
“Come on – this is above our heads as councillors – we’re just small fish in a huge pond,” he continues, but Diane is convinced that he is making too much of this.
"Dai will have a fit!" |
“Dai will have a fit when he finds out about the rugby club’s lease!” Hywel maintains,
"Don't you dare say a word to him!" |
but is strictly forbidden to say a word to Dai, as there is no need to worry people.
"You don't expect me to keep quiet, do you?" |
“You don’t expect me to keep quiet about this, do you?” he demands.
"With no proof?" |
She says that he has no choice, “Do you tell everyone – with no proof – that a company wants to drown our homes? Heavens above – stop worrying when there’s no need to, Hywel!”
She gets up and leaves |
Diane gets up and leaves the Deri.
"Look what I found . . ." |
As Hywel sits there, pondering, Cassie approaches him; “I was looking for some bulbs out the back and look what I found.”
". . . look how much hair you had!" |
She shows him a photograph from some years ago; “Look how much hair you had!” He replies that he still has some, just about.
"Good memories" |
“And Jean and me – we were so mischievous – good memories.
"We're very lucky to live here" |
“You know, Hywel, we’re very lucky that we live in such a close-knit community. There aren’t many places like this left in the world.” This gives him even more food for thought.
"Can you fix this, Howard?" |
Ffion has now been taken to hospital and Mathew is surveying the remains of the flimsy and inadequate racking at APD; he asks Howard to fix it. “Are you going to the hospital?” says Howard
"When I've sorted out the mess here" |
and Mathew answers that he will, after he has sorted out the mess there.
"Why all the mess?" |
A customer comes in and they discovery it is Cassie, who wonders what is the cause of all this mess; Howard describes it as, “Just a little accident.”
"That's why there was an ambulance on the street" |
“Oh – that’s why there was an ambulance on the street,” says Cassie;
"Ffion's gone to hospital" |
Mathew informs her that Ffion has gone to hospital and walks out of the shop.
"He hasn't even been to see her yet" |
Howard comments that Mathew has not even been to see her yet and enquires what he can do for Cassie.
"Those bulbs, over there" |
She wants lightbulbs, but he has something he wants to ask her; “What do you think of these?”
Cassie looks at the photos |
as he shows her the results of the ‘photo-shoot’.
She has to be careful with her comments; “Well, you look . . . what is this photo for?” He tells her it is for an app,
"Oh – a dating app, is it?" |
and she realises that this is dating app. She advises, “Well, you need more than just a photo – what you put in your profile is just as important to these women. What have you said about yourself?”
"There's a tractor emoji" |
“That I like farming – and there’s a tractor emoji.”
"You're going to need more than a tractor emoji!" |
Cassie assures him that he will need more than a tractor emoji – surely he can think of something else to say about himself. While he is thinking about it, she would like to pay for those bulbs.
Ieuan approaches |
Hywel is still in the Deri when Ieuan comes in;
"This is important!" |
“Hey, have you got a minute?” he says, “It’s important.”
"I don't want to know!" |
If this is anything to do with their possible relationship, Hywel does not want to know,
"This is to do with the value of your shares" |
but Ieuan insists, “This is to do with the value of your shares. I’ve been doing a bit of research on your behalf – if this dam comes to fruition, you’ll be a very rich man!”
Hywel is adamant that he does not care about the money –
He is shown the paper |
until he is shown a slip of paper, bearing the figure £306,492, the value of his shares.
"What? As much as that?" |
He looks stunned,
"Yeah!" |
as Ieuan comments, “Yeah!”
Lleucu sits outside the Deri |
On her way back from APD in the rain, Cassie notices Lleucu sitting under the blind outside the Deri, looking at her phone.
"When are you going to realise those phones aren't good for you?" |
“What are you doing, sitting here in the rain? When are you young people going to realise that those phones aren’t good for you?”
"When you old people realise you don't know everything" |
“Around the same time that you old people realise you don’t know everything,” is Lleucu’s response. Cassie regards herself as ‘older’,
"I will never be 'old'!" |
stressing that she will never be ‘old’, and asks if she is worried about Ffion.
She learns of Ffion's accident |
“There’s been an accident at APD – I thought you knew. She’s OK, but I thought perhaps you could send her a little text.
"Why aren't you getting yourself into trouble"?" |
“Why aren’t you getting yourself into trouble out there with your friends – like young people are supposed to do?”
"All my friends are in the Gogs!" |
Lleucu ruefully replies, “Because, they’re all in the Gogs!” [North Wales]
"You're still in contact, aren't you?" |
Cassie assumes that she is still in contact with them, but is told, “They’re all too busy enjoying themselves – and getting themselves into trouble without me.
"Nobody wants to be friends with me" |
“Nobody here wants to be friends with me – perhaps it’s because I talk weird!”
"That's not true" |
Cassie takes issue with this, asking if she has started at the school; “Not really – and the holidays have only just started.
"What am I supposed to do for the next month?" |
“What am I supposed to do for the next month? Talk to the wall?”
"Well, I'm your friend" |
Cassie stresses that she is Lleucu’s friend and that she is welcome in the Deri any time; “Thanks, but I can’t keep hanging out with ‘older’ people,” Lleucu jokingly points out,
"I don't know if I fit in here" |
“I just don’t know if I fit in – perhaps I’ve made a mistake coming to live here.”
Mathew is at the hospital . . . |
Mathew is at the hospital
. . . where Ffion is sleeping . . . |
and can see Ffion sleeping in her bed.
. . . he looks very worried |
He looks very worried and appears to be tempted to run away.
"That money would put Esther through college" |
Hywel acknowledges that the money would put Esther through college
"And no worries about your pension" |
and Ieuan points out he would not have to worry about his pension. “Are you sure this figure is right?” Hywel demands.
He is warned not to stir up a hornets’ nest;
"You know the Western Post loves a scandal" |
“You know the Western Post loves a conflict of interest scandal – but I’m not going to tell them –
"Looking out for my little brother!" |
“looking out for my little brother!”
"What do you really want, Ieuan?" |
Hywel wonders what Ieuan really wants; “Why have you taken the trouble to do this?”
"A DNA test" |
The answer is a DNA test, which is all that Ieuan is asking for – five minutes of his time – at least that is what it says online.
"A positive result would suit you" |
“Of course, a positive result would suit you, wouldn’t it? Then perhaps you could claim half the shares – they were Dad’s shares and they’re worth a lot of money, as you know. Your bank account doesn’t make for pleasant reading at the moment!”
"I'm not here to fill my pockets!" |
Ieuan is outraged at the suggestion that he is there to fill his pockets. “It wouldn’t surprise me!” Hywel snarls,
"Bit of a coincidence, isn't it?" |
“It’s bit of a coincidence, you claiming that we’re brothers when you don’t have a penny to your name.”
"That's no reason to rewrite history" |
“That’s no reason to rewrite history to steal your inheritance!” exclaims Ieuan, but is told that everyone knows he would do anything to save his own skin. He walks away in disgust.
"People in the village know I'm here" |
As Mathew sits quietly by her bedside, Ffion is looking at her phone; “I see that people in the village know I’m here.” Mathew whispers that he has not told many people.
"It's nice to know that Lleucu cares" |
“Lleucu’s been texting – it’s nice to know that she cares.”
"I'm so sorry, Ffi" |
Mathew assures her that he is so sorry,
"It was an accident" |
but she reminds him that it was an accident. “I shouldn’t have lost my temper and shouted – have they said anything about . . . you know?”
"There never was a baby" |
She enlightens him that there is no baby; “There never was a baby.”
"Do you know where my best friend lived?" |
As their conversation continues, Cassie asks, “Do you know where my best friend, Jean, lived?
"What – Tenerife?" |
“In Tenerife – I couldn’t jump in the car and bomb up the A470 to Tenerife. Although there was a sea separating us, it made us closer, in a way.
"We talked on the phone a lot" |
“We talked a lot on the phone and arranged holidays together often, so that made it special. We made the most of that time, enjoying ourselves. We got into a lot of trouble, but . . .”
"What sort of trouble?" |
However she refuses to go into any detail about what kind of trouble, but summarises, “Best friends last for a long time – as long as you make the effort.
"You have these fancy phones now" |
“You have these fancy phones now to do everything – FaceTime and things.”
"Have you ever thought about being a therapist?" |
Lleucu wonders if she has ever thought of being a therapist;
"Why do you think I work behind a bar?" |
“Why do you think I work behind a bar?” is the reply, “It will take you some time to find your feet – what do you think I’ve stayed here for so long?
"You can't leave me with all these 'Hwntws!" |
“And you can’t leave me with all these ‘Hwntws’. [slang for ‘South Walians’ as opposed to ‘Gogs’ – North Walians] We need people like you here!”
Hywel must have clocked up several pints |
Still inside the Deri, drinking another pint, Hywel is looking concerned when Diane comes in,
"You're not still here?" |
surprised to find him still there.
"I'll organise a meeting with the company" |
“If you’re worried about it, I’ll organise a meeting with the company to try and find out what’s going on,” she offers,
"There's no need for that, Diane" |
but now he attempts to downplay the problem, insisting that there is no need.
“If what you say is true, I have a duty to protect this village,” she emphasises, “No matter what my personal circumstances are.”
"Don't worry – everything's fine" |
“You don’t need to worry – everything is fine,” Hywel tells her and she comments that he has changed his tune. “Yes, well, I talked to Oswyn earlier and perhaps the company had plans to build a dam years ago,
"Those plans are history now" |
“but that’s history now.”
Diane is pleased to hear that, but goes on, “Mind you, if someone had plans to drown the valley,
"They wouldn't have a hope against us!" |
“they wouldn’t have a hope against us! Cwmderi’s in safe hands!”
"You've been out for hours" |
Cai is becoming worried about Lleucu and is on the phone to her; “You’ve been out for hours and now you won’t tell me where you are!” he rages, just as she walks into the house.
"There's no need to shout, Dad" |
“There’s no need to shout, Dad, I’m here,” she tells him, “I’ve been with a friend – I heard about Ffion and I’ve texted her. She’s OK and coming home tomorrow.”
"I thought I'd take you camping" |
Cai explains to her, “I know you’re disappointed you couldn’t go camping with your friends, so I thought I’d take you tonight.”
"I can't think of anything worse!" |
“Dad, love you and everything, but I can’t think of anything worse than spending a night in a tent with my father.”
Cai is rather deflated |
He is somewhat disappointed with this response,
"I've just had a bit of a mini-crisis" |
but she assures him, “I’ve just had a bit of a mini-crisis – but now I’m fine. Don’t panic, but I just wasn’t sure if Cwmderi suits me, but I’m fine now – Cass helped me see sense – and she made me realise that North Wales isn’t that far away.
"It's not as if I live in Tenerife" |
“It’s not as if I live in Tenerife. Right, I’m going to FaceTime the girls – and please don’t worry, all right?
"Perhaps it's a bit of PMS or something" |
“Perhaps it’s a bit of PMS [Premenstrual syndrome] or something.”
Howard needs help with his spelling |
Howard is sitting at the bar and asks Cassie how to spell ‘Blewog’, meaning ‘hairy’; “I’m trying to do a better biog, like you suggested.”
"I don't think that will sell you to anyone" |
She does not think that describing himself as ‘hairy’ is going to sell him to anyone, if she is honest.
"Lleucu says you've been a big help today" |
Then Cai comes in to thank Cassie; “Lleucu says that you’ve been a big help today.”
"That girl is quite a character" |
She remarks that the girl is quite a character; he had tried to help her by offering to take her camping and wonders what Cassie told her. “Oh, nothing special – I just told her about Jean.”
"Whatever it was, she's a different person tonight" |
Whatever it was, Cai says that it has made her different person tonight;
"Don't be so hard on yourself" |
“Sometimes it’s easier to talk to friends – don’t be so hard on yourself,” Cassie adds, and he remarks that she always says the right thing. She is easy to talk to and that is in her nature.
"You make people feel comfortable in your company" |
“You make people feel comfortable in your company – and I really appreciate it, Cassie. I’m glad Lleucu can turn to someone like you.”
Mathew brings coffees |
Mathew has been to get some coffees and returns to Ffion.
"I was in the flat to get my coat" |
“Look, I haven’t explained why I was in the flat earlier,” he begins, “I was there to get my coat and I thought you were out.”
"I didn't think you'd snuck in as a surprise!" |
She smiles, “I didn’t think you’d snuck in as a surprise!” He apologises and assures her that it will not happen again. Ffion is concerned that he is all right
"Nothing really has changed" |
and he says that he did not think she was pregnant until this afternoon, so nothing has really changed.
"Are you disappointed?" |
She asks whether he is disappointed; in reply, he asks whether she is. “This was supposed to be a bit of fun, wasn’t it? I don’t know how much you heard when I was talking to Jinx earlier. “The reason I thought I was pregnant was because I haven’t been feeling very well for a while now.
"I don't know what's wrong with me" |
“Don’t get me wrong – it’s a relief that I’m not pregnant, but now that I’m not, I don’t know what’s wrong with me.
"Why am I off my food, always tired?" |
“Why am I off my food, always tired?”
"Make sure you talk to the doctors, Ffi" |
She has not yet mentioned it to the doctors, so Mathew urges her to make sure she talks to them;
"I'm sure everything will be OK" |
“I’m sure everything will be OK.”
