Jinx is ironing his shirt

Jinx is doing some ironing, and Ffion comments, “I didn’t know you were going to court today.”   He announces that he is going out tonight, but she objects to this;

"We're supposed to be going to the cinema tonight"

“Cai and I are supposed to be going to the cinema tonight.   We can’t now, can we?   Who’s going to look after Arwen?   Please, Jinx, can’t you cancel?”

"I'm not going to cancel my date!"

He makes it quite clear, “No – I’m not going to cancel a date just because you haven’t arranged a babysitter for your child!”

"Anyone I know?"

She appears shocked, and wonders if it is anyone she knows;

"No"

he replies that it is not.

Gaynor prepares to go out

Gaynor removes her phone from the charger and puts it into her bag.

"Is Dad here?"

Rhys comes in, looking for his father, who is upstairs at the moment.   “He’s promised to lend me some old DVD about the old finals of the WRU cup,” he says,

"I'm going to the village"

and Gaynor is off to the village when he notices a copy of the family tree on the table, which she needs to take to Jinx.

"This is the old one"

“This is the old one – where is the one I did?   It was more detailed,” he complains.

"That's the one Esther chose"

She answers that she asked Esther which one she wanted to give to Jinx, stressing that there was no intervention from anyone, and this is the one she chose.

"Look, she's included Sheryl"

“Look, she’s included Sheryl,” she points out, and he remarks that everyone else is missing.

"If you have a problem, talk to Esther"

“If you have a problem with it, you can talk to Esther, OK?” she says

Rhys is concerned

as she leaves the house.

"I'm glad you persuaded me"

Eifion is looking a bit calmer over breakfast, and Iolo is glad that he was persuaded not to go after Howard;  “I wouldn’t have had a chance if he’s as bad as you say.”

"I'm all right"

Eifion confirms that he is, and Iolo wonders if he has ever considered counselling, but he insists that he is all right.

"You will have  to so something"

“You have to do something to do with the fact he’s back here.”   Eifion replies that he is going to do something –

"Something I should have done immediately"

something he should have done immediately.

Gaynor gives the family tree to Jinx

As she walks past Bethania, Gaynor encounters Jinx and hands over the family tree, at which he expresses disappointment.

"I thought after what we discussed . . ."

“I thought after what we discussed . . .”   She does not remember them discussing anything,

"It was just a chat"

describing it as only a chat.

"She was worried how you would react"

He goes on, “I talked to Rhys last night, too – he said he’d offered to buy Esther a Ugandan flag, but that she had refused because she was worried about how you would react.”

"You're overthinking things"

She accuses him of overthinking things, and insists that Esther is fine;  he still looks concerned.

"It does work both ways, Kath"

Brynmor understands that he has to make more of an effort with Vicky and Nicky, but stresses that it works both ways.

Kath looks at him . . .

After Kath looks at him sternly,

. . .and he agrees to take the first step

he acquiesces, “All right, I’ll take the first step – where are they, anyway?”

"They've persuaded Mark to take them for a day out"

Kath says that somehow they have persuaded Mark to take them for a day out.

Brynmor thinks that will do him a world of good,

"Perhaps we should go out for the day as well"

and suggests that perhaps they should go out for the day as well;  “It would be better than sitting here, worrying.”   She sighs that it is as if Mark has turned his back on her, just when he needs her the most.

Brynmor reminds her that these things take time to sort out, and urges her not to worry too much, or she will make herself ill.

"I'd do anything to be ill instead of him"

“Look, I’d do anything to be ill instead of him,” she groans.

Eifion remonstrates with Eileen

Eifion and Iolo have gone round to Penrhewl, to reason with Eileen, but meet with a frosty response.   “You really think I should sack someone just because you say so?”

"He should be in jail"

Eifion points out that she knows what he is like, and he should be in jail, not earning a respectable wage.

Iolo informs her, “I tried to persuade Eifion to go to the police, but he’s too scared – please, Eileen!”

"It's your word against his"

She alleges that it is all Eifion’s word against Howard’s.

"You saw the state I was in!"

“You saw what he did to me – you saw the state I was in!” growls Eifion, “He killed Flam!”

"He did not kill the dog"

Eileen replies that he did not kill the dog, but he was used for breeding and has only just died naturally.

"So he didn't set the dogs on me either?"

“So he didn’t set those dogs on me either?” demands Eifion.

Eileen emphasises that she needs a good worker and that everyone deserves a second chance.   “No they don’t – not if they’ve done the things he’s done!” Eifion shouts.

"Photos of Sioned in the shower!"

“What about the things you’ve done?” she demands, “Deceiving Jim, stealing sheep, photos of Sioned in the shower, cheating on Cadno with another man.   How many second chances have I given you?”

Iolo storms out

Some of this comes as news to Iolo, who marches out of the farmhouse, and Eifion it follows him.

Gaynor is preparing the meal

Gaynor is preparing vegetables when Jinx calls at Llwyncelyn, informing Hywel that he has something important to discuss.

"I'm worried about Esther"

“I’m worried about Esther,” he begins,

Gaynor immediately takes notice"

which attracts Gaynor’s attention, “She’s been a bit quiet recently, and I’m starting to suspect why, after our chat in the village the other day.”

"Is this about the flag business?"

“Is this about the flag business?” enquires Gaynor, “I thought we’d sorted things out.”

"What flag is this?"

Hywel wants to know what flag this is, and she insists that she is doing what is best for Esther.

"But if you deny her history . . ."

“But if you deny her history, isn’t that going to harm her?” asks Jinx;  she is adamant that she is not denying the child’s history.

"Since when have you been an authority on it?"

She also wants to know since when Jinx has been such an authority on the matter.

"Perhaps it's not your place to decide"

“Perhaps it’s not your place to decide her identity,” he answers, and she replies that Esther made that family tree and she decided not to put them down.   He adds, “Possibly because she was scared of something – you?   I’d better go.”

"I want to hear what you have to say"

Gaynor is strongly in favour of that, but Hywel is interested in hearing what he has to say, which Gaynor finds amazing.

Brynmor is buying vegetables

Outside the shop, Brynmor is selecting some potatoes

"It's been a hard morning"

when Britt comes out, looking very flustered;  when he greets her, he can see that something is the matter and she apologises that it has been a hard morning.

He is going to cook a meal for Kath

He explains that he is not a serious chef, but Kath is terribly worried about Mark, so he thought he would try to lift her spirits and cook her favourite meal.

Eileen laughs at Corned Beef Hash

Eileen is rather surprised to hear that the favourite meal is Corned Beef Hash, which she finds hilarious.

"Don't you think she deserves something better than a meal?"

She suggests, “If Kath is as worried as you say, don’t you think she deserves something better than a meal?   I don’t know – not just something that makes her smile, but something that makes her laugh out loud.”

"Good idea, Eileen!"

He concedes that she has not done that for a while;  “Good idea, Eileen!” and he racks his brains.

"Is there anything else I should know about?"

“Is there anything else I should know about?” demands Hywel, and Gaynor awkwardly says that she feels as if she is on trial.

Esther has complained about her hair

Jinx remarks that Esther has complained that her hair has been tied back too tightly and that it hurts.

“She mentioned that you took her to the salon to try and change her hair,” he continues,

"I wanted to make things easier for her"

and Gaynor protests that they went to the salon to discuss ideas on how to make things easier for her.

"Hair is an important part of a person's identity"

“You do realise that hair is an important part of a person’s identity?” he adds, “It says a lot about who you are – sometimes it specifically says who you are.”

"Some people would regard this as racist"

She has had enough of this and walks away, as Jinx explains to Hywel, “You do understand that some people would regard this as racist,” but Gaynor objects most strongly to this.

"But perhaps you are"

“Perhaps you don’t realise this, but with the way you’ve been behaving recently, perhaps you are.”

She makes it very plain that she would never do anything to hurt Esther,

"I thought it important to voice my opinion"

and Jinx’s intention was not to upset her but thought it important to voice his opinion.

"Get out – and take your opinion with you!"

Hywel orders him, “Just get out – and take your opinion with you!”   He does so, and Gaynor is looking very concerned.

"Is there anything else I don't know about you?"

When they arrive back at Y Felin, Iolo angrily asks, “Is there anything else I don’t know about you, then?”

"Look, I'm not a saint"

Eifion replies that there probably is, and points out that he is not a saint.

"Taking photos of Sioned in the shower?"

“Deceiving Jim, taking photos of Sioned in the shower?   You just keep making stupid choices, don’t you?”

"I chose you!"

“I chose you!” is the reply, which Iolo complains makes it harder to be angry with him.

"What are we going to do about Howard?"

He wants to know what they are going to do about Howard;

"You're not going anywhere near him"

“I have a few ideas – but you’re not going anywhere near him!” Eifion insists.

"So that's where the Fig Rolls go!"

Brynmor returns to Maes-y-Deri, where Kath is devouring a Fig Roll;

"Look out of the window"

“I’ve got a surprise for you – look out of the window.”

"No, Brynmor – no way!"

She reluctantly does so, and when she sees what it is, she flatly refuses to have anything to do with it, maintaining that she is not ready.

"You're getting better every day"

“You’re getting better every day, and this is the next step,” he says, but she regards it as a step too far,

"You're not a doctor"

reminding him that he is not a doctor.   “Do you really think I’d do something that would harm you?” Brynmor demands, “The last few days and weeks have been hard for everyone –

"I insist that we have some fun this afternoon"

“so I insist that we have some fun this afternoon.   Trust me!”

Jinx fears that he has done more harm than good

At Cysgod y Glyn, Jinx confides to Ffion, “I’m not sure if I’ve done more harm than good.   Hywel was angry – he wouldn’t even consider that I might have a point,” and then the conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Cai.

"How's lover-boy, then?"

“How’s lover-boy, then?” he smiles, and Jinx realises that Ffion has told him.

"You didn't tell me not to"

She says that he did not forbid her from doing so,

"Did you use my top tips from the other day?"

and Cai continues, “Did you use my top tips from the other day to get this one?”   Jinx is not sure that his head is in the right place to go on any date.

"Now we have someone to babysit"

Cai is pleased to hear that, so now they have someone to babysit;  “I didn’t say that,” argues Jinx,

Jinx decides that he is going

“Yes, I am going!”

Is that jealousy?

Ffion is already betraying some signs of jealousy.

"I have to do Eifion's shifts"

As they walk along the street past the former bank, Cassie tells Eileen that she does not have much choice but to do Eifion’s shifts, with the way he is behaving these days.   “I’ve had enough of him for one day!” Eileen growls,

A motorcycle comes into view

and they see a motorcycle coming round the corner by the Deri, which seems to have acquired a new sun awning.  Kath is sitting gleefully in the sidecar and waving her walking stick.

"Don't do too much, too soon, Kath"

Eileen can see that Brynmor did think of something, and Cassie warns Kath not to do too much too soon.   Brynmor is determined he will not let that happen.

"Look out, boys – Kath Jones is back!"

“Look out, boys – Kath Jones is back!” she exclaims,

Off they go

and they set off for their ride.

Esther is playing with her teddy

Esther is pretending to feed her teddy bear when Gaynor comes into the room;

"Burgers and Pizza"

“I’m giving Lili her supper – burgers and pizza.”

"If you're ever worried about anything"

Gaynor says, “If you’re ever worried about anything, you can always tell me, right?   Anything at all – I’m here for you, all right?

"Does Lili want anything for pudding"

Does Lili want anything for pudding?”

"What's the occasion, then?"

In the shop flat, Eifion and Mathew are enjoying a can of Carling;  “What’s the occasion then?” Mathew asks, and Eifion replies that something has happened.

"The bloke who set the dogs on me is working at Penrhewl"

“You remember the bloke who set the dogs on me?   He’s working in Penrhewl – I saw him – I had such a shock –

"The whole thing came flooding back"

“the whole thing came flooding back.”   He is told that he should have a word with Eileen.

"Eileen knows, and she doesn't care"

“Eileen knows, and she doesn’t care.   I can’t go to the police about him, as I don’t want to drag Iolo into all this as well.”

"What's 'all this'?"

Mathew wonders what ‘this’ is exactly, and is told that Eifion wants to teach him a lesson, for which he needs Mathew’s help.

"Oh, you mean Howard?"

Mathew suddenly realises that this is Howard, who set the dogs on him.

"It's a date – happy now?"

Jinx is sitting on the bench in the sunshine when he is told that he looks very smart by Rhys;  “It’s a date, OK?   Are you happy now?”

"Dad said you were there"

Rhys says that his father told him that Jinx had been to see them, and Jinx is beginning to regret that he opened his mouth.

“He knows that Gaynor’s got some problem with Esther’s race, but he’s frightened of upsetting her,” Rhys goes on, and Jinx maintains that Esther deserves better.

"Don't want your date to be disappointed"

“Right, I’d better go – we don’t want your date to be disappointed that she doesn’t get to spend the night with me!” Rhys boasts.

"Sorry I'm late"

Then Petra arrives, apologising for being late;

"No way do I look like Gruff Rhys"

Jinx tells her, “I wasn’t sure whether to wear a beanie hat and grow my beard – no way do I look like Gruff Rhys!”

"I've booked a table in Carmarthen"

He advises that they are going to Carmarthen, where he has booked a table at a vegan restaurant;  “I wasn’t sure if you ate meat or not.”

"That sounds great . . ."

Petra tells him that it sounds great, and was wondering where the taxi is;

". . . I take it we're not walking there?"

“Because I take it we’re not walking?”   This slight detail seems to have escaped Jinx’s planning,

Jinx phones for a taxi

takes out his phone to book one.

"I wonder who she is"

As they sit in front of the television at Cysgod y Glyn, Ffion is musing, “I wonder who she is?   Jinx’s date.”   Cai says that it is none of their business, but she goes on, “He might not come back tonight.”

"Why are you interested in Jinx's date?"

“Does it matter?” Cai snarls, “Why are you interested in Jinx’s date?”   She replies that she was just annoyed because they could not go to the cinema, but he points out they have a decent film there.

"All we need is for you to be quiet"

“All we need to enjoy it is for you to be quiet.

"I'm not a gangster, Eifion!"

In the shop flat, Mathew is very quiet, and explains to Eifion that he is not a gangster;  “I don’t think this is a good idea – all you’re doing is lowering yourself to his level – and I don’t want to see you getting into trouble either.”

"I shall have to do it myself, then"

Eifion concludes that he will have to do it himself in that case, and assures Mathew that he will be careful.   Mathew warns,

"I don't want to upset Tegwen, all right?"

“Howard is Tegwen’s brother  – I’ve known for a couple of weeks – and I don’t want to upset Tegwen, all right?”

“What about me?   You’re not even together any more,” Eifion protests,

"I'm determined to win her back"

but Mathew is determined to win her back, and if Eifion does something to her brother, it will ruin everything.

"For the first time since Izzy . . ."

“For the first time since Izzy, I have a chance to be happy – like you do with Iolo –

"Concentrate on Iolo"

“so stop this nonsense and concentrate on Iolo, because he’s the important one, not Howard.

Ffion is up in the night

Ffion gets up during the night for a drink of water;

She takes out her phone . . .

she takes her phone from the pocket of her dressing gown and composes a text message to Jinx,

. . . and send a text to Jinx

‘When will you be home?’

She looks downhearted

She looks very downhearted, probably hankering after old times, such as this occasion, on  5 February this year.

Flashback to last February
