They look at each other |
Out in the back street by the alley, Jaclyn and Garry are looking at each other.
![]() |
"The world falling to pieces – and look at us" |
Jaclyn laughs; “You, me – the world is falling to pieces, and look at us!”
![]() |
"My timing has always been off" |
Garry confesses, “My timing has always been off,” but she maintains that his timing is perfect. “When will I see you next?” he asks, but she just sighs,
![]() |
"Gerwyn wanted to come with me" |
replying that it is difficult; Gerwyn wanted to come with her today. “Just tell him you want some peace to clear your head – every day, if you have to!” Garry suggests.
![]() |
At this stage, at least, they are socially distancing |
They peer into the alley from opposite sides as a siren can be heard in the distance. “That’s the worst thing – we don’t know how long this is going to last,” she groans.
![]() |
She seems to be obsessed with Garry |
![]() |
"Cassie's getting fed up" |
She tells Gerwyn that Cassie is becoming fed up, and he grumbles, “She’s lucky – some of us have too much to do.
![]() |
"Tes shouldn't be out on her own" |
“Where’s Tes? She shouldn’t be out on her own – you know what the GP said.”
![]() |
"She's no more at risk than anyone else" |
Jaclyn points out that she is no more at risk than anyone else,
![]() |
Gerwyn is panicking |
but he exclaims, “Everyone’s at risk – if something happens . . .” Jaclyn is confident nothing is going to happen, but he slouts, “How do you know? People are dying.”
![]() |
"Stop obsessing about Tes!" |
She loses her temper and screams at him, “Stop obsessing about Tes! Four of us live in this house!” then finds that Guto has eaten all the breakfast cereal. Gerwyn comments that they only bought the box yesterday, and Jaclyn suggests that they should put him on rations.
![]() |
"If Garry Monk put his hand in his pocket!" |
Gerwyn is concerned that it is not easy to feed four adults on 80% of normal wages; “Things could could be better if Garry Monk put his hand in his pocket!”
![]() |
"He doesn't have to contribute" |
![]() |
"What Garry Monk wants, Garry Monk gets!" |
“He always lands on his feet – whatever Garry Monk wants, Garry Monk gets!” he rants, and strongly objects to his wife standing up for Garry. He storms out of the house, growling, “I’m going to look for my daughter, in case she does something stupid.”
![]() |
Tesni is frantically trying to contact Mathew |
Tesni is at that moment banging violently on the door of the shop flat, demanding that Mathew let her in,
![]() |
"That door's covered in germs" |
and her father warns her that the door is covered in germs. Undeterred, she continues to shout for Mathew, and Gerwyn wants to know where her hand sanitiser is. She snarls, “Do you want me to gargle with it, too? Stop treating me like a child!”
![]() |
Jaclyn tells them to be quiet |
As he advises her to stop acting like one, Jaclyn has been attracted by the commotion, and warns them to be quiet;
![]() |
Mathew hears what is going on |
Mathew is just coming round the corner by Cwm Delhi when he hears this altercation. Jaclyn tells Tesni to go home and she can phone Matthew later,
![]() |
"It's all right for you!" |
but Tesni yells, “It’s all right for you – you can stay together 24/7!”
![]() |
"Which isn't easy, believe you me" |
Her father reminds her that they live in the same house, and Jaclyn mutters, “Which isn’t easy, believe you me.” Tesni decides that she had better move in with Mathew in that case, and as Gerwyn promises that will be over his dead body, Mathew turns round and walks delectedly away.
![]() |
"If one of you become ill . . ." |
When Tesni has gone home, her father explains to Jaclyn, “If one of you became ill, I don’t know what I’d do.”
![]() |
"Is everything all right?" |
Garry happens to be passing, and asks if everything is all right; he adds that he counts his blessings every day.
![]() |
"And your money!" |
“And your money!” exclaims Gerwyn, “Sorry, but things are tight – it’s hard to put food on the table.” Garry agree is that it is hard for everyone, and a lot of people are on furlough. Gerwyn continues, “A lot of employers are paying their share to support good workers.”
Smiling, Garry replies, “Some obviously have more money than sense,” but Gerwyn points that it is called conscience, wondering whether Garry is familiar with the word.
![]() |
"Conscience? No, I don't think I am" |
He answers, “Conscience? No, I don’t think I am.” When he is asked to think about it, he replies that he just did, and the answer is no.
![]() |
"Do you think I'm stupid?" |
Gerwyn marches off home, and liberally applies sanitiser to his hands; he demands, “Do you think I’m stupid? I know what you were doing out there just now. There’s no point denying it.” Jaclyn is worried for a moment, as he goes on, “You were apologising for me –
![]() |
"Support from my wife would be nice" |
![]() |
"We're all struggling, not just you" |
She screams at him, “I was not backing anyone – we’re all struggling, not just you!
![]() |
"I'm struggling with people" |
“I’m struggling with people – things – and it would be nice if you could see that.”
![]() |
Garry has a one-track mind at present |
The next we hear is Garry pleading with Jaclyn to come to the garage, as Gerwyn is not there at the moment. She argues, “I know, but he’ll still be there, in my head.”
![]() |
Dani is stressed |
Up in the Deri flat, Dani seems very fraught, and is surprised when Garry compliments her, “You look nice.”
![]() |
"Where's my husband – a miserable swine?" |
She turns and asks him, “Right, where is he? My husband – dark hair, this tall? He’s usually a miserable swine!”
![]() |
"We should try and be nice to each other" |
He replies that they should try and be nice to each other, as lockdown is hard enough as it is, without them making things worse.
![]() |
"Another contribution to the fund" |
![]() |
"I'm going for a walk" |
then, after looking at some papers, says he is going for a walk, and she urges him to take Gwern with him.
![]() |
"He's on the Xbox again" |
He maintains that the boy is busy, but Dani replies, “On the Xbox again – fresh air will do him good.”
![]() |
"We agreed not to argue" |
Garry reminds her that they just agreed not to argue, and she hopes that he will enjoy his walk.
![]() |
She is hanging around again . . . |
Sitting on a seat at the corner of the back street, Jaclyn is obviously waiting for the arrival of Garry,
![]() |
. . . waiting for Garry, who soon arrives |
who tells her that she looks lovely.
![]() |
"Be honest, I look like a scarecrow" |
“Be honest, I look like a scarecrow – I’m desperate to sort out this hair,” she laughs, and they both agree that they have missed each other.
“Ger’s a nightmare – all we do is argue,” she says,
![]() |
"Yes, I noticed" |
and Garry remarks that he has noticed;
![]() |
"You're not here to listen to me complain" |
“You’re not here to listen to me complain about my husband,” she goes on.
![]() |
"He's with you, day – and night" |
“He’s the lucky one,” Garry concedes, “He’s with you, day – and night. Come to the garage with me.”
![]() |
"We're breaking the rules as it is" |
Turning to face the wall, she reminds him that they are breaking the rules as it is, but he considers that does not matter. She adds that people are dying, but he tells her to close her eyes, and tell him what she sees;
![]() |
"You see us together . . ." |
“You see us, together – and I’m moving closer, and closer. I hold your hand tightly, you open your eyes, we see each other –
![]() |
"Shall we go? Please?" |
“Shall we go? Please.” She confesses that she wants to, more than anything, but they cannot,
![]() |
Hang on – who is coming out of the alley? |
and she backs away, to the middle of the street.
![]() |
It is Dylan, on the lookout for leverage |
Dylan has just emerged from the alley and sees them; he hurries away, unnoticed.
![]() |
"Our time will come, Garry" |
As they emerge from the alley into the High Street, Garry agrees that she is right, but she assures him that their time will come, she promises. “I’ll have to learn to be patient, is that what you’re saying?” he asks, and at that moment Gerwyn comes running out of the alley.
![]() |
"I've been looking for you" |
“I’ve been looking for you,” he tells his wife, and Garry makes up a story that has been wanting to chat with Gerwyn.
![]() |
"You've got quite a woman there" |
Worried, Jaclyn tries to dissuade him, but he continues, “You’ve got quite a woman there, you know – I hope you realise that. Not everyone can persuade me to change my mind, but she has.”
![]() |
Gerwyn is perplexed |
As Gerwyn looks bemused, as usual, he is informed, “Your full wages will be in your account next week – and Jaclyn’s, of course. I hope it helps both of you.”
Gerwyn wonders why he has been discussing this with Jaclyn, and she rounds on him;
![]() |
"You should thank me for sorting it out" |
“You should thank me for sorting it out, and Garry for being so kind.”
![]() |
Gerwyn simply walks away |
Gerwyn dismissively says he has things to do and walks away, as Garry tells her that if it makes life easier for her,
![]() |
"It will be worth every penny" |
it will be worth every penny, as he returns to the Deri, which is displaying a poster, reading, ‘Every cloud has a silver lining.’
![]() |
"Are you all right, Guto?" |
When Jaclyn returns to her house, Guto is standing glumly outside, and when asked if he is all right,
![]() |
"I don't know – you tell me" |
replies, “I don’t know – you tell me,” before walking away.
![]() |
Weird photo, with Jaclyn both inside and outside |
During their next phone call, Garry asks why Jaclyn keeps putting herself down, and urges her not to do so.
![]() |
"We're in the money now" |
Inside, Guto taunts his father that they are in the money now, thanks to Mr Monk, but Gerwyn is sceptical about seeing a penny of it.
![]() |
"I've never trusted Garry Monk" |
As he sits down Gerwyn predicts, “It wouldn’t surprise me if Garry changes his mind. He promised, but since when does his word count for anything? I’ve never trusted Garry Monk, and I don’t intend to start now.”
![]() |
"Well, I trust him" |
Jaclyn answers that she trusts him, and goes upstairs,
![]() |
"I think we all know that" |
while Gerwyn mutters, “Yeah, I think we all know that.”
![]() |
Dani is cleaning in the Deri |
Dani is cleaning the bar in the Deri when the phone rings; Gerwyn wants to speak to Garry, and when he tells her what it is about,
![]() |
"He told you what?" |
she gasps, “He told you what? No, I didn’t know. Leave it with me – he’ll phone you back.”
![]() |
"Gwern's working without me hassling him!" |
Garry comes downstairs, announcing, “Halleujah! Gwern’s working without me hassling him – it’s a miracle.”
![]() |
"Why are you paying him and Jaclyn?" |
She acquaints him with the fact that Gerwyn called, wanting to know where his money is. Why are you paying him and Jaclyn? They’re on furlough.”
![]() |
"Things are tight" |
He explains that things are tight; “Well, I’m sorry to hear that, but things are tight here, too – so why did you agree?” He argues that he did not want to lose them, as mechanics like Gerwyn do not grow on trees. Dani reminds him that neither does money.
![]() |
"Tell him you've changed your mind" |
“Right, please phone him back and tell him you’ve changed your mind!” she instructs him, but he says he cannot do that.
![]() |
"Do you hear the till ringing?" |
“Look at this place – do you see customers? Do you hear the till ringing? No! The door has been closed for ages, and I’m worried, so, please.”
![]() |
Garry walks out of the Deri |
He answers that he gave them his word, and she wonders why he would do that; “Gar, we’re family, not them . . . Garry!” But he has walked out of the pub.
![]() |
She is waiting for him again |
This time Jaclyn is hanging around at the back of the boarded-up salon when Garry approaches, and she can see that something is wrong.
![]() |
"Dani knows about the cash" |
Gerwyn has phoned Dani, and she now knows about the cash.
![]() |
"In one ear and out the other with him" |
“I told him not to say anything – it’s in one ear and out of the other with him,” she moans.
“Dani’s not happy, obviously, and wants to know what’s going on,” he says, and Jaclyn does not blame her; he should have checked with her first.
![]() |
"There are a lot of things Dani and I don't discuss" |
“Sorry about that – there are a lot of things Dani and I don’t discuss these days,” he tells her.
![]() |
"Go back to Dani, and I'll go back to Ger" |
“So this is my fault, is it? Is that what you’re saying?” Jaclyn demands, “Well, you can go back to Dani, and I’ll go back to Ger – that’s what should happen.”
![]() |
"You weren't just a bit of fun to me" |
Garry is becoming angry; “What should happen and what’s going to happen are completely different – you weren’t just a bit of fun to me – not something just to keep me going through lockdown.
![]() |
"I love you" |
“I love you.”
![]() |
"Come on, let's go" |
She looks at him, dumbfounded, and he turns to walk away, but she informs him, “I love you too. Come on – let’s go!”
![]() |
Garry needs no second bidding |
They head in the general direction of the garage.
![]() |
"Where is you mother?" |
At number 10, Gerwyn is again wondering where Jaclyn has gone; Guto has no idea, and then hears Tesni’s phone sound.
![]() |
"Please tell me that's Mathew" |
“Please tell me that’s Mathew,” he groans, “I can’t stand this any more – there were more laughs on the Titanic.”
She is disappointed to see that the message simply tells her Mathew has been busy and will talk soon, which she finds unsatisfactory, as there is no kiss, no heart, nothing.
![]() |
"He must want to finish with me" |
“He must want to finish with me – I know there’s something wrong, and loads of couples have split up during lockdown.”
![]() |
"Loads stay together, too" |
Her father protests that loads stay together, too,
![]() |
Gerwyn goes in search of Jaclyn – again" |
and now proposes to go out looking for their mother. Guto puts on his shoes.
![]() |
Following their brief liaison . . . |
In the unromantic surroundings of the garage, Garry is doing up his shirt, and tells Jaclyn that she is quiet;
![]() |
. . . Jaclyn finishes dressing . . . |
she has almost finished putting on her dress, and assures him that she does not regret it for a second.
![]() |
. . . and kisses Garry |
They engage in a passionate kiss,
![]() |
Smirking Dylan walks in |
which is rudely interrupted by a smirking Dylan, who walks in through the door.
![]() |
"How long have you been there?" |
“How long have you been there?” Jaclyn demands.
![]() |
"Long enough" |
She is told, “Long enough to know what’s going on,”
![]() |
"We were talking about money" |
and her explanation about discussing money is totally unconvincing.
![]() |
"Him, Jacs? Have you lost the plot?" |
Looking with distaste at Garry, Dylan sneers, “Him? Jacs, have you lost the plot?”
![]() |
"I think it's time you left" |
When Garry tells him to leave, he snarls, “Shut up – I’m talking to my sister! You look very close to me. I’ve seen you around the place – more than once, to be honest – here and there. Things have obviously moved forwards very quickly.”
![]() |
"You have no right to threaten me" |
Garry threatens to throw him out, but he responds, “I don’t think you’ve got any right to threaten me,”
![]() |
"Please don't tell Gerwyn" |
and Jaclyn pleads with him not to tell Gerwyn. As his phone sounds, Dylan confirms that he will think about it, but whatever he decides, they have not heard the last of this.
![]() |
"Everything will be all right – trust me" |
He goes outside to answer the call, and Jaclyn asks Garry what they are going to do. He replies, “Nothing – everything will be all right – trust me.”
![]() |
Dylan summons up his courage |
Plucking up the courage to answer his phone, Dylan says, “Daf, I’ve told you you’ll get the money. I just need more time, that’s all.
![]() |
"How am I supposed to do that in the middle of lockdown" |
“How am I supposed to do that in the middle of lockdown?” but Daf appears to have terminated the call.
