"Want another coffee?"

Rhys comes downstairs and asks his father if he would like another coffee;  Hywel completely ignores him, looking at his phone.   “This is stupid – you haven’t spoken to me all weekend – even Esther has noticed.”

"What do you want to discuss?"

“What do you want to discuss?   That I have a traitor for a son?” Hywel snarls.   Rhys reminds him that they still have to live together,

"All I need are my shares"

but his father points out that the only thing he needs is to have the shares transferred back to him.

“That’s all that matters to you, is it?   I might keep them after all –

"I could use it for the campaign"

“I could use the winnings to help the campaign against the dam,” Rhys suggests.

Now Hywel is becoming angry;  “Don’t mess around – transfer them,

"You'll be looking for somewhere else to live!"

“or you’ll be looking for somewhere else to live!”   With that, he marches out of the house.

"Have your electrics gone?"

At APD, Siwsi is sorting the batteries;  she asks if one particular size fits the large torches, which leads Ieuan to wonder if the electrics have gone in her house.

"No – Colin needs new batteries"

“No, I passed Colin on the way in – he needs new batteries before they go on holiday.”

Then he asks how she got on with looking after her friend’s dog.

"It licked a little girl's ice cream"

“Lovely, thanks – apart from when the dog went up to a little girl in the park and licked her ice cream!”

"You missed some drama!"

Ieuan tells her that she missed some drama there;  “Tom and Gaynor – the carnival – it was awful.”

Howard slams down the van keys

Their conversation is cut short by the arrival of Howard, who slams down the van keys on the counter and tells them that it is full of diesel.   “Do you know what’s wrong with him today?” Ieuan asks.

"Hope he's in a better mood tonight"

Siwsi hopes that he is in a better mood tonight;  “We’re going out for a drink – I’ve been looking forward to it.”

"How long's this been going on?"'

Ieuan is intrigued by this, wondering how long it has been going on, but is warned to keep his voice down;  “Tonight will be the first date.”

Siwsi is worried

It is obvious that she is rather worried about it, so Ieuan goes to have a word with Howard,

"Don't worry – I'll be subtle"

promising that he will be subtle, so she should not worry,

Siwsi is not reassured

but she is not consoled.

"Oh, there you are"

He shouts for Howard and finds him sitting outside, looking miserable.   He replies that he is doing some stock-taking;

"Eleri's cancelled our contract"

“We don’t have much work after Eleri cancelled our contract, so I’m checking the stock.”

"It doesn't cost anything to be civil"

Ieuan reminds him that it does not cost anything to be civil – and he was rude to Siwsi just now.   He sits down beside Howard;

"Are you going to tell me what's wrong?"

“Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?   A little bird tells me you and Siwsi have a date tonight.   There must be a reason that you’re angry rather than cock-a-hoop.”

"I'm not good enough for her"

“I didn’t even agree to a date – but that’s what happened, somehow,” Howard moans, “Of course I want to go, but I’m not good enough for her.”

"Don't be so soft, Howard"

Ieuan tells him not to be so soft,

"I'm not good enough for her!"

but he angrily repeats that he is not good enough for her.

"Come over to number 7 later . . ."

Ieuan boasts, “Listen, you won’t find anyone better than me to help you with women – come over to number 7 later for a coffee –

". . . so you can learn from the master"

so you can learn from the master.”

Howard is not convinced

Howard does not look optimistic.

"Ceffyl Du's not open"

Kelly visits Rhys at number 21;  “I was going to come and see you at Ceffyl Du, but it’s not open today,” she comments.   He replies that he is about to go over there now.

"I'm knackered after the carnival"

“I’m knackered after the carnival, mind – it was loads of work, wasn’t it?   But it was worth it to see everyone enjoy themselves –

"Auntie Neet was in her element"

“and Auntie Neet was in her element, so that’s what’s important.”

She can clearly see that there is something wrong and asks him, “Are you OK?   You’re not usually, like, speechless.”

Rhys does not reply

There is no answer,

"Is it anything to do with us kissing?"

so she assumes, “Is this anything to do with us kissing?”

"It was a 'just in the moment' thing"

He flatly denies that and they agree that it was a ‘just in the moment’ thing,

"Yeah – we were 'carried away'!"

when they were ‘carried away’.

"So what is the problem

“So what is the problem?” she demands

"It's Dad!"

and he replies that it is his father.   “Honestly, right, you’re not usually the most principal person, are you?   But you did amazing with the carnival!

A lot of people admire you"

“And, for what it’s worth, I and a lot of other people admire you for what you said.”

"It's like a Mexican stand-off here"

Rhys thanks her for that, remarking that it is like a Mexican stand-off in the house – horrible.

"Have you given his shares back?"

Kelly asks if he has given his father back the shares;

"I wanted to teach him a lesson first"

“Yes, I just sent the form away, but he doesn’t know that yet.   I wanted to teach him a lesson first.”

Kelly laughs

Kelly laughs.

"Eti-what?"

At number 7, Ieuan announces that he wants to give Howard an etiquette lesson;  “Eti-what?” he asks

"Buy her flowers – open doors for her"

and is told that he should buy her flowers and open doors for her.    Ieuan would also like to explain how to push a chair in as she sits down,

"I'm not stupid, Ieuan"

but Howard protests that he knows all about that and is not stupid.

"You must relax"

“Well, the other thing is to be a gentleman – and relax.”

"I can't relax!"

That is where Howard has a problem, insisting that he cannot relax and decides that he is just going to cancel.

"No – don't do that!"

He is urged not to do that.

Eleri complains to her father

In Cysgod y Glyn, Eleri is on the phone to her father,

"There's no sign of the company logo!"

complaining, “There’s no sign of the company logo in this dreadful paper, just a picture of Rhys Meirion in the Deri with Britt and Colin!   Yes, Dad, I understand that it’s more important than my feelings – all right, I’m just angry, but I’ll sort it out, don’t worry.”

The buzzer sounds

During this conversation, the buzzer sounds and Hywel is admitted to the flat.

"What are you going to do about this shambles?"

“Well,” she exclaims, “Have you seen the Western Post?   There is no information about the company – what are you going to do about this shambles?

"The carnival is your mess!"

“From where I’m standing, the carnival is your mess.”

"This is not my fault . . ."

On the contrary, Hywel is adamant that this is not his fault;

". . . I've lost a lot more than you in this fiasco!"

“I’ve lost a lot more than you in this fiasco!”   She agrees that ‘fiasco’ is the right word and he goes on to list, “Self respect, people’s feelings towards me

"My relationship with Rhys is in tatters"

“and my relationship with Rhys is in tatters.   If he doesn’t give those shares back to me, I don’t benefit at all!

"And your ego!"

So I have more important things to worry about than your photos in the paper – and your ego!”

"Have you finished?"

“Have you finished?” she demands, “Because I don’t want you to have a heart attack in my flat!

She instructs him what to do next

“Now, as you obviously have no idea what the next step should be, I’ll tell you.   The worst thing we can do is show our opponents that we are worried about this.   We need to prove that we are effective and reliable and we’re not going anywhere.”

"An office will be a step forward"

He acknowledges that an office in the village will be a step forward

"Right – sit down"

and she tells him to sit down.

"I'm nervous about Siwsi hearing the truth"

Howard continues explaining to Ieuan, “I’m not nervous about the date – I’m nervous about Siwsi hearing the truth about me.   The terrible things I’ve done over the years – and what I did to Kelly!”

"But they understand each other now"

Ieuan reassures him that they understand each other now,

"She will hate me when she finds out"

but Howard continues, “Siwsi will hate me when she finds out.”

"Well, don't tell her, then"

Ieuan’s rather simplistic solution is not to tell her.

"It's important to be honest"

Howard stresses that he thinks it is important to be honest with her, but is told that is a conversation for another time;  “No-one says everything on the first date, Howard, trust me.”

"This is what's going to happen . . ."

Eleri instructs Hywel on what is going to happen;  “The official opening of the office – a big show – buffet, wine, photos, invitations – I want to invite everyone in the village.   They’ll come, if there’s free food and drink.   And we need the top dogs from the Western Post – and councillors.

". . . so you've got a lot to do in two days"

“So, chop-chop – you’ve got a lot to do in two days.”

"Two days?"

He laughs at her suggestion of two days and she tells him that there is no time to waste.

"You haven't got a canary's chance of it being finished!"

“You’ve got no chance of getting APD to finish the office in time – not to mention sending out invitations,” he insists.

"By Thursday, Hywel"

She orders, “By Thursday, Hywel, and if you have to get APD back – do it!”

"I've always said that you're hasty"

“I’ve always said that you’re hasty,” he comments,

"You have to make scary decisions"

but she maintains that you have to be brave and make big scary decisions.

"And regret them later?"

“And regret them later?” he suggests.

"I don't regret anything"

She maintains that she does not regret anything.

How do you expect me to persuade them?"

“How do you expect me to persuade APD to take this contract back if they’ve lost so many days’ work?” he demands.

She leans back in her chair and exclaims, “Wow – it’s interesting that you expect me to hold your hand and show you how business works.

"Make that happen – or you'll be looking for another job!"

“The Quantum Hydro Works office in Cwmderi will be ready by Thursday afternoon – and I expect you to make that happen, or you’ll be looking for another job, OK?”

"How did that paint order go?"

Ieuan asks Siwsi how the order for paint went in the end and she replies that it was her fault, as she wrote 61 instead of 16,

"Numbers and me don't get on"

complaining that she and numbers do not get on.

"I expect you're nervous about tonight"

He concedes that everyone makes mistakes, suspecting that she may be nervous about tonight;  “There’s no need to worry about Howard – he’s feeling tip-top.”

"You might as well go and get ready . . ."

Hywel comes in and Ieuan advises Siwsi that she might as well go home, to get ready for tonight,

". . . and mind you behave!"

reminding her to behave.   Hywel wants to know whether Ieuan would rather hear the good news or bad news first.

"Eleri wants you back on the job"

“Eleri wants you back on the Quantum Hydro Works office job.”   This surprises his brother after her reaction last week,

"I apologise on behalf of the company"

so Hywel apologises for that on behalf of the company.

"On behalf of Eleri, you mean"

“On behalf of Eleri, you mean,” says Ieuan.   When asked if they can finish the job,

"Mathew is the one to make that decision"

he continues that Mathew is the one to make that decision and he is away on a health and safety course at the moment.   Then he wants to hear the bad news.

“It has to be ready by Thursday,” Hywel groans.

"That will be very expensive"

Ieuan predicts that it will be very expensive and is told, “The official opening is that afternoon.”

Hywel is reminded that they have lost several days already.

"I'm sure you'll get more work"

“If you agree, I’m sure you’ll get more work – there’s this new estate to replace Maes-y-Deri for a start.”

Ieuan is less than hopeful;

"I'll talk to Mathew"

“Leave it with me – I’ll talk to Mathew – but only because you’re my brother,” he replies,

"Don't let her treat you like a lap-dog!"

“And don’t let her treat you like a lap-dog!”

This makes Hywel think

This appears to strike some kind of chord with Hywel.

Siwsi and Howard enter the Deri . . .

Siwsi and Howard come into the Deri;  while her attention is distracted,

. . . and Geraint produces prearranged flowers

Geraint takes out a bunch of flowers from under the bar and hands it to Howard,

Siwsi is surprised . . .

who presents it to Siwsi.

. . . describing Howard as a gentleman

She is most impressed;  “I didn’t realise there was such a gentleman hiding in those dirty overalls,” she exclaims.   He asks what she would like to drink;

"That fizzy prosecco stuff?"

“Wine, G&T, or that fizzy Prosecco stuff?”

"G&T, please"

She chooses G&T, which he orders, after some hesitation.

"I assume everything is fine for Thursday"

Hywel is back at Cysgod y Glyn, this time carrying something in his hand;  without even looking at him, Eleri says, “I assume everything is fine for Thursday.”

"I'm resigning!"

He advises, “I’m resigning!   You’re impossible to work with – you’re hasty, inconsistent – and I don’t really need the job.”

"I don't have to accept your resignation"

“Well, sorry, Hywel, but I don’t have to accept your resignation,” is her reply, but he does not consider that she has much choice.   She takes the envelope.

Siwsi is rabbiting on

“That’s why a group of us go to Trecco Bay each year,” Siwsi tells Howard, but he does not seem to be taking any notice, although he does half-heartedly comment that it sounds lovely.

"Sorry, am I talking too much?"

“Sorry, am I talking too much?” she wonders,

"I'm not talking enough"

but he says that he is not talking enough.   “If you’ve changed your mind, that’s cool,” she remarks,

"We can finish the date now"

“We can finish the date now.”

"No, don't – please stay"

“No, don’t – please stay,” he begs her, “I’m sorry.”

"I don't know you tonight"

Siwsi cannot understand what has happened to the guy she has been having so much fun with at work;  she does not know him tonight.

"I've done a lot of bad things"

Howard takes a deep breath and begins, “Well, that’s the thing, in a way, because you don’t know me – not properly, anyway.   I’ve done a lot of bad things and I think that you should know the truth in case things go too far.”

"What would you do without this job?"

As she looks at the letter from Hywel, Eleri demands, “What would you do without this job?”   He replies that he was fine before.   “You won’t be welcome back on the council – and don’t tell me you’re going back to teaching –

"I can't imagine you as a teacher"

“I just can’t imagine you as a teacher.”

“Well, I can always sell my shares if money is tight,” he answers,

"I could join the campaign against the company . . ."

“You know what?   If I did that, I could join the campaign against the company, because we know we’re not doing this for the community –

". . . I know a lot about Quantum Hydro Works"

“and I know a lot about Quantum Hydro Works that isn’t public knowledge – well, not yet, anyway.”

"Are you blackmailing me?"

He denies any suggestion that he is now blackmailing Eleri;  “No, not at all, but I want you to know what things would be like without me.   And do you know what?   APD is your only hope of finishing that office in time – good luck with organising that without me!”

"What do you want?"

She demands what he wants;

"More respect from you"

“What I want is for you to show more respect towards me – I’m not going to do your dirty work for you.”

"OK"

She simply replies, “OK,” and hands back the envelope to him;  he believes that they understand each other now.

"I'll make sure they finish the job"

He will go and make sure that APD finish the job.

"I've got paperwork to do"

“Great – now, if you don’t mind, I’ve got paperwork to do,” says Eleri

Off goes Hywel . . .

and he leaves the flat.

. . . leaving Eleri very displeased

She does not look at all pleased about this turn of events.

"I'm not going near prison ever again"

“Im not going near prison ever again,” vows Howard, “I didn’t have friends then, but Cassie and Sioned have been very kind – although my record with women is quite dodgy.”

"You don't have to say any more"

Siwsi insists that he does not have to say any more, but he wants to;  she says that she does not need to know every detail.

Kelly arrives

Meanwhile, Kelly and Rhys have just walked in.

Siwsi remarks that everyone has a history and she admits that she is no angel either;  she suggests that they have another drink.   As she goes to the bar, looking rather apprehensive,

"I'll just pop to the toilet"

Howard pops to the toilet.

"How's it going with Howard?"

“Aye, aye – how’s it going with Howard?” Kelly asks;

"Well, I think"

Siwsi thinks that things are going well.

"Glad to see he's behaving"

“Glad to see he’s behaving,” Kelly goes on.

"He told me about the things he's done"

“He’s told me everything about the things he’s done – but he’s changed now, so . . .”   She looks at Kelly and wonders if there is anything that she needs to know.

"Clearly he hasn't told you everything . . ."

“No offence, like, I don’t know you – and clearly he hasn’t told you everything,” begins Kelly, but then is reluctant to say any more, but Siwsi is eager to know.

". . . he threatened to rape me – ages ago . . ."

“Howard threatened to rape me . . . ages ago,

". . . but he has apologised"

“and do you know what?   He has apologised,” Kelly tells her.

"Tell him my grandmother's ill"

Siwsi immediately picks up her bag and heads for the door of the Deri;  “Tell him my grandmother’s ill,” she says.

"What was that about?"

Rhys comes across and wonders what that was about.

Howard finds that she has gone

Meanwhile, Howard returns from the toilet, finding Siwsi gone and the flowers left behind;  “Has anyone seen Siws?” he asks.

"Her gran is ill or something"

“She apologised but she had to rush off – her gran is ill, or something.”   Howard thinks that he should go after her with the flowers, but is advised against it.

"I'm sure she'll be all right"

Rhys is sure that she will be all right, wondering if she and Howard had a good time.

“Yes – I really like her,” he answers, so Rhys is sure that they will have another date, in that case, and proposes that he should have a pint to celebrate.

"I deserve to celebrate"

“I’ll get these – because I deserve to celebrate,” Howard maintains.

"What have I done?"

Kelly appears to be regretting what she said.
