23 August 2023

Jason is very depressed

Jason is sitting miserably at the table in Bryntirion, while Dai is speaking to Diane on the phone;  “No, Ifan’s fine . . . it’s on my ‘to-do’ list – I’m going to the chemist this morning.

"Yes, Jason's fine, too"

“Yes, Jason’s fine, too – do you want a word with him?”

Jason does not want this,

"Jason!   Jason!"

so instead Dai pretends to shout for him,

"Sorry – he's just left for work . . ."

and then tells Diane, “Sorry – he’s just left for work – ‘chillax’, as they say –

". . . talk to you later"

“talk to you later.”

Then he informs Jason, “Your mother and Glenys Pop have arrived in Palma safely.

"Kelly having a lie-in?"

“Where’s Kelly?   Is she having a lie-in?”

Something is obviously wrong

Jason does not reply,

"What's happened now?"

so Dai demands, “What’s happened now?

Kelly has spent the night at the Deri flat

Cassie is eating her breakfast in the Deri flat when Kelly walks in, having been given refuge there;  “At least you didn’t have to sleep on the street,” says Cassie.

"Have Ieuan give me tips all night"

Kelly thanks her for providing shelter for the night;  “The last thing I wanted to do was to go to Auntie Anita and have Ieuan give me tips all night.”

"There's coffee in the pot"

She is told that there is coffee in the pot and pours herself a cup.

"The jungle drums have been beating, then"

“There’s no point asking if you had a good night’s sleep, under the circumstances,” Cassie continues, and Kelly realises that the jungle drums must have been beating non-stop in the bar last night.

Cassie does not want to take sides

Look, I’m friends with you and Jason and I’m not taking sides,” says Cassie

"Nothing happened in that house"

and Kelly again explains that nothing happened between her and Jinx in that house.

"And nothing before that, either?"

“And nothing before that, either?   Look, I’m glad you and Jinx are all right after the fire.”

“Jinx just wanted a quick valuation of the house,” Kelly insists,

"Do you think my marriage is over?"

adding, “Do you think my marriage is over?”   Cassie asks if she wants it to be, and Kelly decisively answers, “No!”

"You'll have to stick to your decision"

“I’m not going to interfere, but if you want Jinx, this is your chance – but if you want Jason, you’ll have to fight for him and after making a decision, you have to stick to it,” is Cassie’s advice.

"You're lucky your mother's not here"

Having been updated on the situation, Dai declares, “You’re lucky your mother’s not here, that’s all I can say.   She would have torn Kelly to shreds!   Is there much damage after the fire?

"Just thinking it could be a job for APD"

“I was just thinking it could be a job for APD – silver linings, as they say – or perhaps not.   Listen, Jason, I’m not the best person to give advice on things like this –

"We're both builders, aren't we?"

“I’m not very good at talking about emotions, you know, but, heavens above, we’re both builders, aren’t we?”

"And?"

Jason wonders what this has to do with anything,

"Things can go wrong"

so Dai explains, “You know how to build a wall – that takes a lot of work, a lot of patience, a lot of energy.   Things can go wrong – the odd brick can be out of kilter.   Perhaps the level is wrong, perhaps things are loose, perhaps the mix is wrong.”

"I'm not quite sure where I'm going with this now"

Jason looks increasingly puzzled, as he continues, “Sometimes another contractor wants to take the job from you.   Right . . . I’m not quite sure where I’m going with this now – but that’s why you should talk to Kelly!”

"There's nothing more to say to Kelly"

Jason insists there is nothing more to say to Kelly,

"You don't want the wall to collapse!"

but is warned that he does not want the wall to collapse.

Kelly sits on the sofa . . .

Kelly sits despondently on the sofa – a different sofa to the gold coloured one which was previously in the Deri flat – when there is a message alert on her phone.

. . . until she is summoned to 'come home'

She is surprised to see that it says simply, ‘Come home,”

"Is there still a chance?"

and she wonders if there is still a chance.

Dani prepares for the bail hearing

It is rather crowded in number 7 as Britt and Colin are visiting;

She will take some clean clothes for him

Dani thinks that she should take some clean clothes for Gwern.

"It makes no sense for a boy that age"

Colin insists, “It makes no sense to keep a boy that age in overnight.”

"This place needs a tidy up"

Britt is concerned about the state of the house;  “This place needs a tidy up – where’s the Hoover?” Dani is adamant that she will do it later, but Britt goes on, “I don’t want Gwern to come home to a messy house.”   Dani does not know yet whether he will be allowed to come home.

"Garry wasn't pleased when he phoned"

“Garry wasn’t pleased when he phoned last night,” Britt mentions,

"It doesn't help with him not being here!"

and Dani points out that it does not help with him not being there and that she is trying to keep tabs on the boy.

“You need to be stricter with boys his age so they know where they stand,” Britt insists,

"You're being unfair, Britt"

but Mark accuses her of being unfair, as Dani is doing her best.

“I know that, Mark, but there’s nothing wrong with a bit of discipline.”   Dani protests that she has already tried that,

"That's enough, Britt!'

and Colin tries to shut Britt up, as usual without success.

"If I was his mother, he wouldn't have the chance"

“All I’m saying is, if I was his mother, he wouldn’t have the chance to go out and try to murder anyone!”

"Isn't it about time you left?"

Colin suggests that Mark and Dani should make a start, as I do not want to be late.

"It's good to see you, Kelly"

Dai welcomes Kelly into Bryntirion, commenting that it is good to see her;  “I have heard, and I want you to know it’s got nothing to do with me,” he says,

"I just want you two to sort things out . . ."

“I just want you two to sort things out.

". . . and I won't say a word to Diane"

“And I won’t say a word to Diane, in the hope you will have sorted things by the time she gets back.”

Kelly mutters, “You’ve got more faith than me,” as Jason comes downstairs.

"I have a prescription to pick up"

Dai is going to leave the house now, as he has a prescription to pick up, so it will give them the chance to have a little chat.

They look at each other

There is a long silence,

"I know this is a huge ask"

before Kelly begins, “Jason, I know this is a huge ask, but I just want a chance to explain things – and then if you still want the marriage to be over,

"I'll respect your decision"

“I’ll respect your decision.”   Jason looks into her eyes and says nothing.

Dani and Mark are on their way

Dani and Mark are walking along the street when Jinx sees them,

"What's happening with Gwern?"

asking what is happening with Gwern.   “We’re on our way to see him now,” Mark replies, and Dani apologises that what he did was terrible.

"Just don't be too hard on him"

“Just don’t be too hard on him,” Jinx urges her, “He was just trying to make his feelings clear, wasn’t he?   I’m not 100% sure he knew we were in there.”

"So  you're not angry?"

Dani is surprised that Jinx is not angry, and is asked to to let him know how things go.

They hurry past DS Fielding

DS Fielding comes out of the pharmacy, with Maya, just as Dani is passing;  “I take it you’re on your way to see Gwern.”   Mark it anxious for them to get on their way.

"You'll find out his fate soon enough"

Maya remarks, “Come on, D, you’ll find out Gwern’s fate soon enough.

"People will start wondering"

People will start wondering why you’re so interested in the boy.”

"Jinx broke my heart when he left Cwmderi . . ."

Kelly and Jason sit, facing each other;  “Jinx broke my heart when he left Cwmderi – and then, when he came back, it knocked me for six.   I thought I’d let go, but obviously I hadn’t.

". . . a part of me is always going to love him"

“Our love – Jinx and me – was massive, and yeah, a part of me is always going to love him.   But that’s not enough of a reason to be with him,

"I want you – and Ifan – I love you!"

“because, Jason, I want you – and Ifan – I love you!”

"I love our little family . . ."

She sobs, “I love our little family and I’m so sorry I didn’t deal with it before we got together.   But I know that I made the right decision and

". . . `I want this to work – please!"

“I want this to work – please!”

Jason is becoming tearful

Jason is by now almost in tears.

"Two vegetable curries coming up"

the bar in the Deri, Cassie announces that two vegetable curries are on the way;  Delyth appears to be glued to her phone, and Cassie imagines it must be something interesting.

"Worse than a teenager, she is!"

“Worse than a teenager, she is!” says Maya.

"No news yet"

There is no news about Gwern’s bail yet,

"Let's talk about something other than Gwern"

and Maya wants to talk about something other than that lad for change.   “It’s going to be hanging over my head for ever!” Delyth snarls, “I’m tempted to go over there to see for myself.”

"You'd just be drawing attention to yourself"

“What the hell for?   You’d just be drawing attention to yourself,” Maya objects,

"I arrested him"

but Delyth protests that she has every right to be there as she arrested him.   Maya warns her not to even think about it.

"Sometimes it hits me"

Jinx comes across and is not sure if he has got over the shock yet;  “Sometimes it hits me how serious things could have been.”

"Ever had trouble with Gwern before?"

He is asked whether he has ever had trouble with Gwern before, and the DS wonders why he would want to set the property on fire.

"I've made a statement, OK?"

Jinx reminds her that he has made a statement and has nothing else to add on the subject.

"I'm still worried about the boy"

Delyth is still worried about the boy,

"Who are you talking about now?"

Maya asking, “Who are you talking about now?   He’s what’s behind all this fretting about Gwern, isn’t he?

"Don't you think it's about time you wrote to Simon again?"

“Don’t you think it’s about time you wrote to Simon again?   We’ll go straight home after lunch and you can do it – agreed?”

"I was completely paranoid . . ."

“I was completely paranoid when Jinx first came back to the village,” Jason confesses,

"I was convinced something was going to happen"

“You didn’t know that, but I was convinced something was going to happen between you.   You promise me that you would never do that, especially after what happened with Sara and Dylan – you’ve done exactly the same thing to me!”

"I never thought I'd do this to you"

“I never thought I’d do this to you, I swear,” Kelly assures him

"Did he put pressure on you?"

and he imagines that Jinx put pressure on her or something.

"It was mutual"

“It wouldn’t be fair to say that, because it was mutual,” she explains.

"This is probably really selfish . . ."

Jason goes to sit down on a chair as she continues, “I don’t know – this might be really selfish – it probably is – but perhaps I should just let you go.

". . . but I really, really don't want to"

“But I really, really don’t want to.”

"I'll go up to Ifan"

They hear a noise upstairs and Kelly volunteers to go up, but Jason insists he will do it.

"Is Dani back?"

Jinx calls at number 7, finding Britt and Colin there;  he asks if Dani is back and is told that she is not.   “Today won’t have been easy for her,” he says,

"It's not easy for us, either"

and Britt snaps that it is not easy for them, either.

"How are you, after that shock?"

Colin asks how Jinx is feeling after the shock, as Britt goes outside through the back door;

"I can't believe he'd try to kill me"

“I’m just completely confused – I can’t believe Gwern would try to kill me,” stresses Jinx, “He wouldn’t, would he?”

"I'm trying to be diplomatic"

Checking to make sure that Britt is not there, Colin explains that he is trying to be as diplomatic as possible for her sake;  “But I have to say that I’m worried.

". . . the police must have strong evidence"

“The police must have strong evidence to make the accusation in the first place.”

Britt is listening

They are unaware that Britt has returned,

"Going down the same path as his parents"

as Jinx comments, “It’s sad to see that he’s going down the same path as his parents – in and out of prison.”

"It's had a huge effect on the boy"

“Between you and me,” agrees Colin, “I think losing his mother – and his father, in a way, has had a huge effect on the boy – more than we realise.”

Britt does not like what she is hearing

Hearing this has made Britt angry and as soon as Jinx has gone, she rounds on Colin;

"I don't like you talking about Gwern like that!"

“I don’t like you talking about Gwern like that!   As if he’s got no hope,

"He's made one small mistake"

now that he’s made one small mistake.”

"It;'s not a small mistake, is it?"

He reminds her that this was not one small mistake, but she insists that he is only a young boy and has had a difficult life;

"We must show him his life is not over"

“It’s our place now to show him that his life is not over because of everything that’s happened to him!” she insists.

"Are you feeling better now?"

Delyth comes out of the pharmacy carrying a letter;  “Are you feeling better now that you’ve got that out of the way?” asks Maya, but she replies that has made very little difference.

"I don't see the point"

“I just don’t see the point,” she groans, but Maya maintains that it is worth a try and Delyth will not rest easy until she knows she has done everything she can.

The letter is posted

The letter is posted in the pillar box.

"His bedroom is a mess"

Britt complains that Gwern’s bedroom is a mess;  “Look at all the dirty clothes that I found on the floor.”

"You shouldn't be interfering, Britt"

Colin’s opinion is that she should not be interfering.

"There's no order here, Col"

“There’s no order here, Col,” she goes on and Colin points out that Dani is doing her best.

"She has to look after Gabriel and Seren as well"

“She has to look after Gabriel and Seren as well, remember?”

"He could come and stay with us . . ."

Britt is quite aware of that, but suggests that it would be an idea for Gwern to come and stay with them – to give him a bit of space, a chance to get himself together.   The more she thinks about it, the more she thinks it is a good idea,

". . . we can give him plenty of attention"

as they can give him plenty of attention.

Colin is not in agreement with this, maintaining that he gets enough attention from Dani.   “Perhaps he gets too much,” she sneers, “Parents shouldn’t give their kids too much attention.”

"Now you're being unfair, Britt"

Colin accuses her of being unfair.

“All I am saying is, it might do with him some good to be in your company, too,” Britt  adds,

"Mark Jones is not a very good rôle model"

“Because Mark Jones is not a very good rôle model, is he?”   Colin reminds her that Gwern is Dani’s responsibility now, and she might as well accept that.

"He's a Monk, Col!"

Britt immediately comes up with the old chestnut, “He’s a Monk, Col!   You know, I’m the only blood relative he’s got left in this village – well, Seren, of course.   And anyway, Garry would want me to look after him.”   Colin does not look at all happy about this.

Jason brings Ifan down

Jason brings down Ifan from upstairs and informs Kelly, “You need to find a way of dealing with this Jinx situation – its not fair on you or me that it’s hanging over us.”

Kelly agrees to stay out of Jinx's way

Kelly is well aware of that and he says the best thing she can do is to stay out of his way from now on.   She tearfully agrees that this would be for the best,

"I think Kelly needs a Cwtch"

and he suggests to Ifan that Kelly needs a Cwtch.

“Will you give me one last chance, Jase, please?” she begs,

Ifan is pleased to oblige . . .

and Ifan does indeed give her a cwtch;

. . . after which he is handed back to Dadi

she gives him back to Dadi

"Just one last chance, please?"

and again asks, “Just one last chance, please?”

"I'm willing to try"

Overcome with emotion, Jason answers, “I’m willing to try.”

Britt assembles enough clothes for one night . . .

Britt obviously regards it as a fait accompli and is preparing to take enough clothes for one night back to their house, then Gwern can come and get more tomorrow.

. . . but Colin is not happy about it

Colin is not sure about this arrangement, but she insists, “It makes sense, Col – look, they’re on top of each other here – we’ve got a spare room.”

"Where is he, then?"

The door opens and Dani returns with Mark;  “Where is he, then?” Britt demands

"He didn't get bail"

and they are told that he did not get bail.   Britt shouts that they have no right;  “What happened?   Can we go and see him?”

"We have to wait for a visiting order"

Dani explains that they have to wait for a visiting order.   “There’s no telling what effect being in prison will have on him!” growls Britt,

"It's a Youth Detention Centre"

but is told that he is in a Youth Detention Centre.

"It's a jail, Dani!"

“It’s a jail, Dani!” Britt shouts,

"Prison didn't do me any harm"

and Mark comments that prison did not do him any harm when he was young;  he learned a lo

“Britt demands whether they can appeal the decision;  “We could tell them we’d look after him at home!”   Dani does not consider it a good idea for him to come home.

"Did you tell them that?"

“Did you tell them that?” snarls Britt.

“I’m doing this for everyone’s sake,” Dani replies.

"Well, I hope you're right!"

“Well, for your sake, I hope you’re right, Dani!” growls Britt,

"If anything happens to that boy, I'll throttle you!"

“Because if anything happens to that boy, I’ll throttle you, good girl!”

"Come on, Col!"

and she storms out of the house.
