1 August 2023 (2nd)

Mathew opens the deli

Next morning, Mathew turns round the sign on the door of the deli;  he looks at the document given to him by the police officer.

"In trouble up to your eyeballs"

Anita comes in, with Ieuan, who comments, “I hear you’re in trouble up to your eyeballs for selling alcohol to children.”

"She looked 18 to me"

Mathew argues that she looked 18, but Ieuan adds, “The eyes of the law, you see.   You’re lucky they’re not taking Tamed to court.”

"Then police have to do their job"

Anita agrees with him, pointing out that they have to do their job, with all the underage drinking that is going on.

"I was busy"

Mathew protests that he did not do it on purpose, but was busy;  “You’re doing too much, and look where it’s landed you!” she stresses.   Mathew mutters that her comments are not helpful.

"There will be a black mark against this place for ever"

Griffiths takes over again;  “There will be a black mark next to this place for ever,” and Anita wonders what DJ said about it.

"DJ doesn't know yet"

Apparently he has not been told yet, and Griffiths gloats, “I wouldn’t like to be in your shoes, then!”

Mathew does not know what he is going to tell DJ;

"While you're thinking about it, bring us two lattés"

“Well, while youre thinking it over, bring us two lattés.”

DJ is still at Penrhewl

Eileen shouts upstairs to Huwi that Gwydion’s mother will be there soon, then she finds that DJ is still at Penrhewl.   “I needed to check the accounts, and Mathew is opening up for me – have you seen the tea towels, Eileen?”

Huwi brings the tea towels

He is told they are on the stairs, and at that moment Huwi is bringing them to him.   Eileen hopes that everything will be all right at the deli, and DJ optimistically replies, “With everything else that’s been going on, what else can go wrong?”

"Yes, please, Mam!"

Eileen asks Huwi if he wants some scones to take to Gwydion’s with him.

Mathew is thoughtful

Mathew is pondering in the kitchen of the deli, then goes into the shop,

"Sorry I'm late, Math"

where DJ is just arriving with the box and he apologises for being late.

"Mathew was as white as a sheet earlier"

Ieuan cannot wait to put in his oar;  “Those lattés were very nice – Mathew is a better colour now – he was white as a sheet earlier.   He looked as if he had seen a ghost.”   Anita has had enough of this and decides that they will go,

"If you've still got a licence"

but Griffiths ensures that he has the last word;  “I’ll be back later for a bottle of wine, if you’ve still got a licence!”

"What's he on about, Mathew?"

DJ has no idea what he is talking about and looks expectantly at Mathew for an explanation.

"There's nothing to do – I'm bored"

At Cysgod y Glyn, Ffion asks Arwen what she is going to do today;  “There’s nothing to do,” her daughter grumbles, “I’m bored!”

"The holidays have only just started"

Ffion reminds her that the holidays have only just started, so she is going to be bored for weeks;  Arwen agrees with that.

"Go and look for your friends"

“Go and look for your friends – someone must be around,” Ffion suggests.

"If I can get to Llanarthur by ten"

“Jess and Kel are going to the cinema.   Jess’ Mam can give me a lift if I can get to Llanarthur by 10 o’clock.”

"Sorry, I can't take you"

Ffion is sorry but she cannot take her;  she could go on the bus.   “There isn’t one in time,” Arwen groans, “And all the taxis are booked.”

"I'll phone Siôn"

Ffion will phone Siôn and see if he can take her, but Arwen tells her to simply forget about it;

"By the time he comes, it will be too late"

“By the time Tad-cu comes down, it will be too late.”

Ffion did not realise Arwen was such friends with the Llanarthur group.

Without having her breakfast . . .

Without waiting for her bowl of ALDI ‘Specially Selected really nutty granola’,

. . . she goes in search of Gwern

she leaves the flat, saying that she is going to find Gwern.

Ffion takes a box from the filing cabinet . . .

Ffion goes to the filing cabinet and takes out a box,

. . . then starts moving the sofa

then begins to move the sofa.

"DJ, I am sorry"

The atmosphere at the deli between Mathew and DJ has now become  rather tense;  “DJ, I am sorry,” wails Mathew,

"The important thing is to learn your lesson"

but is told that it is all right.   “I’ll pay the fine,” he continues, but DJ maintains the important thing is to learn his lesson and move on.

"You can go now – thanks for your help"

“You go now – and thanks for your help this morning.   There’s no need to come back later – listen, Mathew,

"I can't expect you to spend all your working hours here"

“I think your time helping out here has come to an end.   It’s nothing to do with the fine – I can’t expect you to spend all your working hours here.   If I’ve got a lot on my plate, that’s my problem.”

"But DJ . . ."

He will not listen to any protests from Mathew;

"I've made up my mind"

he has made up his mind, but is very grateful.

Another batch of chutney

Eileen is putting more jars into a box when the phone rings

"What's wrong, Chloe?"

and she finds that it is Chloe, Gwydion’s mother;  “He seemed all right this morning –

"OK, I'll come and fetch him"

“OK, I’ll come and fetch him now,” she says.

"There's nothing like proper cheese"

Gaynor is in the deli and remarks that there is nothing like proper cheese;  “Better than the plastic stuff from the supermarket –

"Do you have 'Y Fenni'?"

“do you have Y Fenni?”  [Abergavenny – made from Cheddar spiked with beer and wholegrain mustard]    DJ will go and get her some.

Meanwhile Hywel happens to be passing and comes in;

"Someone stole the other bottle"

“I’ve come to look for a nice bottle of Pinot Noir – someone stole the other one from the wine rack,” he remarks,

"Yes, sorry about that"

and Gaynor apologises for that, asking if it was an expensive one.

"I hope you enjoyed it"

“It was worth something,” he replies, but then says that he was pulling her leg and hopes that she enjoyed it.

"The pleasure and pain blended perfectly on the palate"

She recalls that ‘the pleasure and pain blended perfectly on the palate’.   “Do you fancy a cup of tea?” he invites her.

"You said Gwydion was your best friend"

Eileen is bringing Huwi a drink in MFC;  “I cant understand it – you said this morning you were excited to see Gwydion – that he was your best friend.”

"He said that you're old!"

Huwi insists that he does not like Gwydion, and Eileen is convinced that he did or said something.   “He said that you’re old,”

"It doesn't matter if I'm a bit older"

and Eileen maintains that it does not matter if she is a bit older than the other mothers.

"Was Dad old as well?"

“Was Dad old as well?” he enquires, and she realises this is what is bothering him.

"I'm not going anywhere, all right?"

“You listen to me now – I’m not going anywhere, all right?   Do you understand?”

"How's Esther?"

Over their cup of tea Gaynor asks about Esther;  Hywel replies, “She’s just as determined as ever –

"I bought her some clothes and she hated everything"

“I bought her some clothes and she hated everything.”   Gaynor cannot imagine what came over him;

"She's not a child any more"

she reminds him that she is a a young girl, not a child.

"Sometimes I think she's nearer 20 years old"

“Sometimes I think she’s nearer 20 years old,” he sighs.

"I remember Izzy and Lois at that age"

Gaynor remembers Izzy and Lois at that age – and informs him that nothing will get better;  he may as well get used to it.

“You know you can always ask me if you need any help with Esther,” she continues,

"We could have a meal in the Deri tonight"

and he suggests that they could have a meal in the Deri tonight.   He thought it would be nice for Esther to see her again and for her to see that they are still friends.

Gaynor regards that as a good idea

She can also wear her new clothes to show Gaynor.

"The Cysgod y Glyn Cinema!"

When Arwen returns to Cysgod y Glyn, the place is in darkness;  “I’m escorting you to your seat at the Cysgod y Glyn Cinema,” says Ffion,

"Popcorn and your choice of ice cream"

“We’ve got popcorn and your choice of ice cream.   You can choose any film you like – even the pay-per-view ones.”

"Mam, you are weird!"

Arwen tells her mother that she is seriously weird;  “I know it’s not actually like in a real cinema, but come on,” Ffion says,

Arwen receives a text message

just as Arwen’s phone sounds.

"Why are you hiding the message?"

“Why are you hiding the message?” Ffion asks, and is told not to be so nosy.

"I have a right to know what's going on"

“If you’ve been in touch with Macs, I have a right to know what’s going on.”

"Believe me now?"

It is only Jess, asking if Arwen wants to go karting tomorrow because she missed out today;  “Believe me now?”   She shows her mother the screen

"Sorry, I should have believed you"

and Ffion concedes that she should have believed her daughter.   “I told you – I won’t contact Macs any more – don’t worry,

"I'm not going to meet him – not now, anyway"

“I’m not going to meet him – not now, anyway.   That doesn’t mean I never will.”

"Yes, very smart"

Esther models the dress which she will be wearing tonight;  “Do you like it, Dad?” she asks.   He says that she is very smart

"We're going to be late"

and she urges him to get ready or they will be late.

"Are you wearing make-up?"

He notices that she is wearing make-up,

"Gaynor lent it to me"

which she says Gaynor lent to her.

"Not wearing that shirt, are you?"

“You’re not wearing that shirt, are you?” she demands, “Why don’t you wear the check one Gaynor likes?”   He did not know that Gaynor liked that one;

"You know now, don't you?"

“You do now!” says Esther.   He will go and get changed.

DJ is back at the farm

DJ comes into the farmhouse looking exhausted;

"How did it go at Tamed?"

Eileen asks how it went in Tamed today and he says that he is shattered, needing to have a rest for five minutes.   “Before you make yourself comfortable . . .” Eileen begins,

"No, I haven't forgotten to feed the dogs"

but he says that he has not forgotten to feed the dogs.

"No, it's about Huwi"

“No, it’s about Huwi – has he mentioned to you at all that he’s worried I’m old, like his Dad?

"Hus friends have been saying things"

“His friends have been saying things – that would explain his behaviour recently and the fact that he’s got closer to Sioned.

"Sioned's going to be around much longer than I am"

“In his mind, she is going to be around much longer than I am.”

"It's only natural they would get closer"

DJ suspects that there may be more to it than that, as it was only natural that he and Sioned would get closer while his mother was in hospital –

"Perhaps Sioned understands him better sometimes"

“or perhaps it may he that Sioned understands him better sometimes.

Not what Eileen wanted to hear

Eileen  finds this thought rather uncomfortable.

Esther shows off her dress to Gaynor

Esther and Hywel come into the Deri and Gaynor is very impressed by Esther’s dress;  “Dad thought that it was too fancy for the Deri,” Esther tells her,

"And he wanted to wear that blue shirt"

“And he wanted to wear that blue shirt you don’t like.”

"You'd better have a small cola"

He says that Esther should have a small cola, or she will be up all night.

"I'll have a glass of Rosé"

Gaynor will have a glass of ‘rosé’, as that is what she has been drinking lately;  “It’s Cheryl’s favourite.”

"And we're going to have a pudding"

Hywel hands them the menu;   Gaynor fancies lasagne.   “And I don’t care what Dad says, we’re going to have a pudding!”

"I can ask Siôn to give you a lift"

“Are you going with them tomorrow?” asks Ffion, and Arwen tries to give the impression that she is not bothered.   “I can ask Siôn to give you a lift,”

"He's not available"

but Arwen has already asked and he is not available, but it does not matter.

"I'll take you"

Ffion decides, “I’ll take you.”

Arwen is not very happy about that

Her daughter does not want that, but she protests, “I haven’t felt lightheaded for days – I’ll drive slowly, just to be safe – we’ll be fine.”

"Seriously, Mam, I don't want to go"

“Seriously, Mam, I don’t want to go,” argues Arwen,

"Listen – I'm going to take you, OK?"

but Ffion insists that she is going to take her and will not listen to any objections.

"I'm full"

Esther decides that she is full,

"Not surprising, after two puddings"

which does not surprise her father, as she has eaten two puddings.

"You made chocolate pudding?"

“Was it better than the chocolate pudding we had last week?” Hywel asks,

"No, it came from the deli"

adding that it came from the deli.

Esther assures her father that he makes good omelettes, although Gaynor cannot remember them as being particularly special.   “My omelettes are Michelin standard,” he boasts.

Esther heads to the toilet

When Esther leaves them to go to the toilet,

"Thanks for this evening, Gaynor"

Hywel thanks Gaynor for this evening;  “It’s been nice to have your company.”

"Look, I don't want you to get the wrong idea"

She is anxious that he should not misunderstand, but he insists

"We've had a good time, the three of us"

that they have had a good time, the three of them.

"Yes, as friends"

“Yes – as friends, without responsibilities,” she answers, “But having a meal together is different to living under the same roof.”

"But you get on with Esther so well"

He calls her attention to how well she gets on with Esther,

"Look , we're over!"

but she warns him, “Don’t use her to try to sort things out between us – look, we’re over!   You’re great with her – really, you’re lovely with her.   I’m happy in Maes-y-Deri – I can’t deny that it has taken time to settle down . . .”

"Right, it's time that I went"

Then Esther returns and Gaynor thinks that it is time she went,

"We'll do this again soon, all right?"

but promises that they will do this again soon.

Hywel is not a happy man

Hywel is not looking so optimistic.

DJ explains Huwi's and Sioned's relationship

DJ is attempting to explain to Eileen, “I’m just saying that Sioned lets him play with whatever he wants to play with and wear whatever he wants to wear.   Perhaps that’s another reason why they got closer.”

"Do you think he holds it against me?"

Eileen appreciates that she did not let him do those things;  “Do you think he holds it against me?”

"He thinks the world of you"

DJ reassures her that Huwi thinks the world of her – and is still young.

"The image I had of a farmer's son"

“I was scared, you see, that he didn’t fit this image I had of a farmer’s son,” she whimpers,

"Deep down I just want a happy little boy"

“The farmer’s son that Jim would have imagined too,” and she dissolves into tears.   “But deep down I just want a happy little boy – exactly like Jim would have wanted.”

There is a knock at the door

As DJ tries to comfort her, there is a knock at the door and Mathew comes in;

"There's an article about 'Tamed' online"

“I wanted to tell you before anyone said anything – there’s an article about Tamed online.”

"That's a good advert for the place"

Eileen wonders what is wrong with that, as it will be a good advert for the place,

"We've had a fixed penalty notice"

so DJ is forced to reveal that they have had a fixed penalty notice.

"Fixed penalty?"

She angrily demands to know what has been going on,

"Selling alcohol to someone under 18"

and DJ answers, “For selling alcohol to someone under 18.”
