28 August 2024

Sam is wandering around

Maya opens the door of the pharmacy and notices a stranger, loitering on the other side of the road,

"Are you lost?"

looking lost;  it is Sam and he tells her that he is not sure what to do, that is all.   “I was supposed to meet someone for coffee, but they’ve cancelled –

"Trying to work up the courage to text back"

“I’m trying to work up the courage to text back.”

"You must be Maya"

She warns him that they do not sell courage in the pharmacy;  he realises that she must be Maya.   “Iolo said that his friend had a pharmacy.”

"Come in, Sam"

She assumes that he is Sam and invites him in.

"How about a round on the 60s"

“How about a round on the 60s,” Lleucu suggests to Siôn at breakfast time, “Everyone in the quiz will remember that – we studied the 60s in history.”

Siôn replies, “It’s official, then – I’m part of history!”

"Right, I'll be there about nine"

Iolo comes downstairs, promising a customer that he will be over around nine.

Lleucu was under the impression that he had a coffee date with Sam this morning, but he says that he had to cancel because he has so much work on at the moment;

"Everyone has a problem with their water today"

“Everyone in Cwmderi has a problem with their water today – anyway, Mathew’s just given me a job, so I’d better go.

"What's wrong, Dad?"

Cai has been sitting looking anxiously at his phone all this time;  Lleucu asks him what is wrong.

"Twm's not answering my calls"

“I’m trying to phone Twm, but he’s not answering.   I’ve sent him a text as well, to check he’s OK.   Do you think I could join in your call, just to say hello?”

"My phone screen's too small"

She makes the rather weak excuse that her phone screen is so small, that both of them would not fit in, and he knows there is a problem, although she denies it.

"You're making me worry now, Lleucu"

“Why doesn’t he want to talk to me?   You’re making me worry now, Lleucu.”

"We're really missing each other"

“We just want time – just the two of us,” she maintains, “We don’t talk often – and we’re really missing each other, so, if you don’t mind . . .”

"I thought he enjoyed himself"

Maya has made Sam a cup of tea, as he tells her, “I thought he enjoyed himself as much as I did.”   Griffiths can be seen, peering in through the pharmacy window.

"He talks a lot about you"

Maya confirms that Iolo talks a lot about Sam;  “So why did he cancel, then?”

"Women's Institute, is it?"

Griffiths has now come into the shop and sarcastically remarks, “Merched y Wawr [Womens Institute] meeting, is it?”

He tells Maya that he is looking for some cream,

"What sort of cream?"

but she requires a little more information;  he rather awkwardly continues, “I need to put it on . . . Anita used to do it . . .

"I think it was a pink bottle"

“I think it was a pink bottle.”

Maya suggests that he could ask Anita,

"It's the middle of the night in Canada"

but he points out that it is the middle of the night now in Canada;  he will have a look on the shelves to see if he can spot it.

"There's something different about Iolo"

While he is doing this, Sam explains further, “Then we had our first date – there’s something different about Iolo.”

"Iolo is special"

Maya agrees that he is special.   “Listen to me – I sound pathetic!” sighs Sam, but she describes it as ‘romantic’.   “It’s obvious he isn’t – or he wouldn’t have cancelled!” Sam complains.

Ieuan has found what he wanted

Meanwhile Griffiths has found what he was looking for;

"A paper bag is more discreet"

Maya very pointedly asks him, “Do you want a paper bag?   It’s more discreet.”   He picks up his purchase and quickly leaves the pharmacy.

Mathew notices Rhys in the deli

Mathew is passing the deli when he notices Rhys inside, drinking coffee;  “It’s all right for some,” Mathew comments, but Rhys maintains that he is working.

"You're drinking coffee"

“No, you’re not – you’re drinking coffee!” he is told.

“Haven’t you heard of Alan Sugar, James Dyson and JK Rowling?   They all started in cafés – and now they’re rolling in it!”

"I'll buy you a coffee when I'm a millionaire!"

“I’ll buy you a coffee when I’m a millionaire.   By the way, I’ve told Jinx he can have my room when I move out.

"I'll do the packing later"

“I’ll do the packing later – I’ve got stuff to do.”

"Have you got the 'Cic Mil' documents?"

Hywel comes in and Rhys is pleased to see him;  “Have you got the documents?   I texted you to ask for the ‘Cic Mul’ documents.”

"I didn't think you were serious"

His father did not think that he was serious about that, pointing out that he will need planning permission.

"You can give me planning permission"

“You can give me that,” Rhys replies,

"I'm not corrupt!"

but Hywel maintains that he is not corrupt;  in any case Rhys will need a business plan as well.   “So?   I’ve done one of them before – I’m serious about this, Dad.”

"How are you going to pay for the garage?"

“How are you going to pay for the garage?   Is what you make from number 10 enough to cover the rent?” demands Hywel.   Rhys intends to get a loan from the bank, but is warned that banks do not give out loans willy-nilly.

"Help me, then – like you did last time"

“Well, help me, then – like you did last time – I’d really appreciate it,” Rhys pleads.

"Come over for dinner"

His father tells him to come over for dinner tonight and they will discuss it.

"Yes, I promise not to get myself into trouble"

Lleucu comes downstairs at Y Felin and is on the phone;  “Yes, I promise not to get myself into trouble – who are you – Dad?

"Right, I have to go"

Right, I have to go – I will talk to you soon, ta-ra.”

"Twm sends his regards"

Cai comes in from the kitchen with a cup of tea and Lleucu tells him, “Twm sends his regards.”

He wants to know if everything is all right and is informed that Twm is just missing Wales a little bit, but he will settle before long.

Her father can see that she is hiding something

Cai can see from the expression on Lleucu’s face that there is more to it than that.

"A little bird told me you had a date"

Iolo is passing the pharmacy just as Maya comes out and challenges him;  “A little bird told me you had a date this morning – Sam was wandering around, looking lost.   I thought you liked Sam – but you stood him up.”

"It's not like we're really serious"

Iolo says that he does like him, but it is not like they are really serious;  “I’ve got too much work to think about anything else.”

"Do you want to end up a lonely, miserable, old man?"

“Iolo, do you want to end up a lonely, miserable, old man?” she demands, “How about we have a proper catch-up?   Do you want to have lunch in the Deri?   Can we go now?   I’m starving!”

She frog-marches him to the Deri

She drags him towards the Deri and,

"Mam sais to eat breakfast more often"

as they enter, he advises that she should eat breakfast more often, which is what his mother told him.

"Hiya, Iolo!"

Then it becomes obvious why Maya has taken him there, as Sam greets him, “Hiya, Iolo!”

"I'm going to the village"

Cai is sitting at the table, looking very worried, when Siôn announces that he is going to the village.

"Twm isn't answering my calls"

“Twm isn’t answering my calls, but he will speak to Lleucu,” Cai groans.

Siôn says that he should be grateful that his children get on with each other;

"My boys were always at each other's throats"

“My boys were always at each other’s throats.”

"Dubai feels far away, you know?"

“Dubai feels far away, you know?    I’m worried I’m losing touch.”

"Have you phoned Nesta?"

Have you phoned Nesta, to check that everything is all right?” asks Siôn,

"I prefer not to talk to her"

but Cai prefers not to talk to her.

"Who is ignoring who now?"

“So who is ignoring who now?” Siôn comments;

This makes Cai think

Cai considers that he may have a point.

"This is a nice quiet little place"

“This is a nice little place – quiet – where I work is so noisy,” says Sam, as the three of them sit in the Deri.   Maya suggests that they could go out together tonight,

"I'm working"

but Iolo is not keen, giving work as the reason.

"We could enjoy ourselves afterwards"

“I shall be working, too – but we could enjoy ourselves afterwards,” Sam proposes, “It’s a good night in the club tonight.”

"Siôn will look after Greta"

Maya points out that Siôn will look after Greta.

Sam wonders who is Greta and it is explained that she is Iolo’s daughter.

"I was going to tell you, but . . ."

“Look, I was going to tell you, but . . . Greta’s really important to me and I don’t want to confuse her – she’s very young at the moment,” says Iolo.

"You don't need to explain"

Sam insists that he does not need to explain;  “Of course you want to look after your daughter – when you said that I thought he had a girlfriend called Greta!   Can we just carry on seeing each other when we can and have fun?”

Iolo agrees and will ask his father to babysit.

They will go out together tonight"

Maya is pleased they have managed to get that sorted;  they will go out tonight and have an amazing time.

Mathew and Ieuan load the van

Mathew and Ieuan are loading the van

"What are you going tonight?"

when Ffion approaches, bringing Mathew a coffee;  “What are you doing tonight?” she asks,

"I thought we could go out for a meal"

“Arwen’s going to stay with a friend, so I thought we could go out for a meal.”

"I'll leave the coffee inside"

They will go to the Deri and she will leave his coffee inside for him.

"How did it go with Melfa?"

When Ieuan comes back he asks Mathew how it went with Melfa;

"Come on – she's trying to get hold of you"

Ffion, just inside the shop, overhears this conversation.   “Come on – she’s trying to get hold of you,” insists Ieuan.

"I don't want to hear her name again!"

“I don’t want to talk about Melfa!” shouts Mathew, “I don’t want to hear her name again!”

When Mathew comes back in . . .

Ffion puts his coffee on the counter and as soon as she sees him,

  . . . Ffion makes a hasty retreat

she leaves the shop.

"I just wanted to check everything was all right"

Cai finally decides that he will contact Nesta;  “Listen, I’m sorry if it’s a bit late over there, but I just wanted to check everything was OK with Twm.

"I haven't heard from him properly since you moved"

“I haven’t heard from him properly since you moved and I’m just worried.”

"Are you still off your food?"

Sitting in the Deri, Mathew asks Ffion, “Are you going to finish that?   Are you still off your food?   We didn’t have to come tonight if you didn’t want to.”

"If you have someone else to meet . . ."

She wonders if she is keeping him from other plans;  “If you have something else to do – or someone else to meet, please go.”

"Who else would I want to meet, Ffi?"

He wonders who else he would want to meet

"I know about Melfa"

and she says that she knows about Melfa.

"You have the right to talk to . . ."

“Arwen said you’d been talking – and I don’t mind, because we’re just friends having some fun,” she assures him, “You have the right to talk to . . .”

"Melfa is my mother"

Mathew stops her there;  “Melfa is my mother,”

She was not expecting that

which comes as quite a shock to Ffion.

Now Lleucu recommends that Siôn should have a round in his quiz on Welsh bands,

"What was the name of Cerys Matthew's band?"

“Like what was the name of Cerys Matthew’s band?”   This is ruled much too simple, as even Siôn knows that it was Catatonia.

"Are you sure you're all right with this?"

Iolo asks if they are sure that this arrangement is all right and is told to go and enjoy himself.

Lleucu is required to read a story to Greta

“Lleucu, Greta wants a story from you tonight, so someone must have enjoyed your company today,” he adds.   Siôn and Cai sit down with a cup of tea.

"Have things settled down with Twm?"

“Have things settled down with Twm now?” Siôn enquires.

"He's going to come back for a holiday . . ."

Nesta says everything is all right, but I know he’s not settling – he’s going to come back for a holiday – we’re arranging for someone to fly with him, as soon as possible –

". . . I think it will do us both good"

“I think it will do us both some good.”

"I'm pleased you're getting on"

Siôn is pleased to hear that he and Nesta are getting on

"We don't have a lot of choice"

and is told that they do not have a lot of choice.

"When was the last time you talked to her?"

“When was the last time you talked to her?” asks Ffion;  Mathew cannot remember

"She wouldn't even recognise me"

and doubts that his mother would even recognise him on the street.

"Why has she contacted you now?"

Ffion cannot understand why she would have contacted him now, and is told that Griffiths found her;  he thought he was helping.

"Do you think I should meet her?"

“She’s been in touch – do you think I should meet her?” Mathew demands.

"Not if you're not ready"

“Not if you’re not ready – I didn’t talk to Val for years, but I do make an effort now,” Ffion tells him, “I didn’t do anything until I was ready – and even then, I only did it for Arwen to start with.   Perhaps you might change your mind one day, too.

"Do you want to talk to your Mam?"

“I don’t want to interfere, but can I ask you one thing?   Do you want to talk to your Mam?”

"No!"

“No,” he answers, quite definitely,

"Then don't let anyone force you"

so she encourages him not to let anyone force him to do so.

The 'club' where they have gone

The scene shifts to this ‘club’ where Iolo is sitting at a table and Maya brings the drinks;

"It's a bit quiet, but it will perk up"

“I know it’s a bit quiet, but it will perk up.   It reminds me of Liverpool – I used to go clubbing every weekend,” she says.

"Sam still hasn't turned up"

Iolo is becoming concerned that Sam has not turned up,

"He'll be here"

but Maya reassures him that he will be there;  “You’re off-duty for the night, so enjoy yourself.”

"You don't think I freaked him out, do you?"

“You don’t think I freaked him out with what I said earlier, do you?   About Greta?   Don’t you think he sees that as being a bit serious – and that he was just being nice to me?”

"I didn't think you were such a hoarder"

At number 21, Hywel is searching through his paperwork;  “I didn’t think you were such a hoarder,” comments Rhys.   Then his father finds the ‘Cic Mul’ documents, which Rhys might find useful.

"They've dated well, haven't they?"

“They’ve dated as well, haven’t they?” he says and Rhys wonders if they are pre-decimal, but is told to watch his tongue.

"'Horse' sounds better than 'Mule', doesn't it?"

Rhys comes across a beer mat with the name of the previous pub in village, ‘Y Ceffyl Du[The Black Horse].   He is impressed by the name;  “‘Horse’ sounds better than ‘Mule’, doesn’t it?

"It will be a lot more successful than 'Cic Mul'!"

“This business will be a lot more successful than ‘Cic Mul’!”

"They'll want to know the money is safe"

His father specifies that he will need proof;  “Assets, the house deeds, bank accounts – things like that.   They will want to know that the money they lend is safe.

"I can help you – I've got shares"

“I can help you – I’ve got shares – what they are doesn’t matter now,

"You're giving them to me?"

“but I could put them in your name.

"I'll lend them to you – and I want them back"

“Not give them to you – I’ll lend them to you, and I want them back, but they will help you when you look for a loan.”

Rhys will get in touch with Eleri and tell her to get a contract ready for him to sign;

"The 'Ceffyl Du' is up and running!"

The Ceffyl Du is up and running – yee-haw!” he shouts.

Mathew sits in the flat

Mathew sits at home in the shop flat with a beer, waiting for Ieuan to arrive;  “It’s a bit late for a business meeting,” he tells Mathew, who did not want to leave it until tomorrow.

"If Howard's made a mess of that job . . ."

“Listen, if Howard’s made a mess of that job . . .” Ieuan begins, but is told that this is nothing to do with Howard.

"I don't want to talk to Mam!"

“I don’t want to talk to Mam!” he stresses

"You say that now, Mathew . . ."

and will not listen to anything that Ieuan says.

"I want you to respect my decision!"

“I want you to respect my decision!”   He is warned that he might regret it.

"I don't need her in my life!"

“I’m willing to take the risk – you don’t know our history.   It was her decision not to be in my life, so I don’t need her in my life!

"I've got a good life – and Ffion"

“I’ve got a good life here – a good business, good friends – and Ffion.   Mam sent me a message – I’m going to delete that message and block her.

"Do you understand?"

“I want you to do exactly the same thing – do you understand?”

Ieuan nods his head

Ieuan nods his head in agreement.

"I'm fine where I am"

The club scene now appears to be livening up and Maya encourages Iolo to come to the bar, as the group there are great, but he points out he is fine where he is.   She urges him not to be a spoilsport,

"This is Sam's way of saying he's not interested"

but as far as he is concerned, “This is just Sam’s way of saying that he’s not interested, isn’t it?   He’s getting back at me for not turning up this morning.

"I don't like this dating business"

“You know, Maya, I don’t like this dating business.”

She tells him to stop obsessing and forget about him;

"If he's that petty, he's not worth it"

“And if he’s that petty, he’s not worth it.   Just try and have some fun, yeah?  The show is starting.”

"I'm going to phone for a taxi"

Iolo has decided that he is not in the mood and is going to phone a taxi.

"This is Hannah Call!"

The next act is announced;  “Especially for you – this is Hannah Call!”

A weird creature walks toward the stage

An absurdly dressed ‘Drag Queen’ takes the stage, amid a lot of catcalls,

Iolo is looking at his phone

but Iolo is looking at his phone.

"Iolo – look!"

Maya draws his attention to what is going on and he looks with horror.

"Hiya, Iolo!"

The bizarre, freakish object on stage announces, “There’s someone very special in the audience – he knows who he is – “hiya, Iolo!”

"Not Sam?"

Iolo is absolutely aghast at the ludicrous sight.
