The police are appealing for information
We see on the chippy at the corner of the street a police notice appealing for information about the attack.
"Are you sure you can't spare a few hours to help your father?"
Inside the Deri, Dai is haranguing his son;  “Are you sure you can’t spend a few hours to help your father?” but DJ says that he has to be on patrol this afternoon, explaining that more of them need to be out there after what happened to Mathew.
"That's more than we can say about your son!"
Dai acknowledges that he is right;  “At least, my son’s out there, fighting crime – which is more than we can say about your son,” he growls at Diane, “Did he have to go and buy Ifan a present today?   His birthday’s weeks away!   I need to find cover for Mathew ASAP.
Diane assures him that she will help him to find someone,
"Find some cover for Jason as well!"
and he growls, “While you’re at it, you can find cover for Jason as well – he’s spending more time away from work these days.”
"Is there any more news about Mathew?"
Guto comes in to ask DJ if he has any more news about Mathew;  all that DJ can tell him is that Mathew is recovering slowly, and is surprised that Guto has not been to see him.   “Do we know who did it?” asks Guto, but DJ is unable to talk to him, or anyone else, about the police investigation.
"DJ's job is to save cats stuck up trees!"
Dai chimes in, “No, it’s not up to a community officer like DJ to investigate acid attacks – DJ’s job is to save cats stuck up trees!”
DJ is disgusted by this comment
DJ does not appreciate this comment, and again regrets that he cannot tell Guto anything.
"I can't sleep, knowing there's someone out there"
“I can’t sleep – knowing that there’s someone out there, throwing acid at people, isn’t very nice,” Guto protests, and Garry is concerned.
"I reckon someone was targeting Mathew"
Dai’s theory is that it was not random, and that someone targeted Mathew;  “Nefi wen! – who knows – it might be APD next, or the café!      I’d say that anyone who mixes with Mathew needs to be very careful – we all need to be careful, Diane.”
Garry is concerned about Guto's state . . .
By this time, Guto has been reduced to a state of panic, and is extremely nervous;
. . . and tries to calm him
Garry gets him to sit down,
DJ will take him home
and DJ will take him home, as he is obviously still in a state of shock.   Garry advises him to take deep breaths.
Dai groans, “It makes you think, doesn’t it?”
"Yes – it makes me think you ought to keep your mouth shut!"
Diane replies that it makes her think that he ought to keep his mouth shut.   He maintains that he is worried about Guto;
"Drug gangs, acid attacks!"
“Drug gangs, acid attacks – who knows what’s round the corner?”
Daf watches Guto being escorted along the street . . .
As DJ escorts Guto along the street towards his home, they are under surveillance by Daf, standing outside APD.
. . . and into number 10
He watches them go into number 10, and appears to be regretting something.   At that moment Dylan comes through the alley,
Sara come out of the café
and notices Sara leaving the café.
"I've arranged to view a house at Llanarthur"
“What are you doing later?” he asks her, “I’ve organised for us to view a house in Llanarthur at four o’clock.”   She remarks that it goes to show if she complains enough, he listens to her.
"I shall have to complain that I want a big, black Mercedes!"
She thinks that it might be worth complaining that she wants a big black Mercedes.
They are under surveillance
We can see that this little chat is being watched by Daf from across the road.
"Guto was upset in the Deri"
Inside number 10, DJ explains to Gerwyn that Guto was upset in the Deri, when they were talking about Mathew;  “Look, I don’t want to interfere,
"Wouldn't it be a good idea to visit him?"
“but wouldn’t it be an idea to visit him?”   Gerwyn does not agree, but DJ points out that he will not look as bad as he did that night.
"None of us will be going to see Mathew"
Gerwyn makes it quite clear that none of them will be going to see Mathew.
Then DJ asks how Tesni is coping, and is told, “She doesn’t know – she’s away on a revision course know.”
"He doesn't want it to affect her exams"
Guto interrupts, stressing that they do not want her to know what has happened – as it could affect her exams.
His father says they do not want to scare her, but DJ predicts that she will find out what happened before her exams.
"Someone should visit him . . ."
“It will be less of a shock if Matthew starts to recover,” Gerwyn maintains, but DJ still points out that someone should visit him,
". . . he's almost like one of the family"
as he is almost like one of the family.
"Thanks for bringing him home – but it's none of your business"
“Look, DJ, thanks for bringing Guto home, but our family decisions are none of your business!” Gerwyn snarls, and is eager to get DJ out of the house.
Guto is very disapproving
Guto is very unimpressed by his father’s behaviour.
"Whisky, please, Garry"
Dylan comes into the Deri and asks Garry for a whisky.   Garry is surprised;  “Tapas has run out, has it?
"You'd rather pay for it here than get it free over there?"
“My whisky’s so good you’d rather pay for it here than get it for free over there?”
Nevertheless, he gives it to Dylan ‘on the house’;
"Everybody in the village has to stick together"
“After what happened to Mathew, everybody in the village has to stick together –
"Perhaps we could help each other out sometimes"
“perhaps we could help each other sometimes, when it comes to business,” Garry remarks, cryptically.
"Your car's illegally parked"
DJ comes in to inform Dylan that his car is parked illegally;  “You must to remove it or I will report you.”
"I'm not thinking straight, with all this business about Mathew"
Dylan replies that he is not thinking straight after this business with Mathew, and DJ appreciates that they have all had a shock.
"Thanks for warning me"
“Thanks for warning me – instead of just reporting me,” Dylan goes on, “I admire you – not everyone would give their time to a hard profession like policing.”
Garry appears to have saved himself a whisky
Garry, who has already retrieved the whisky he had given to Dylan, is smiling, as Dylan agrees to go and move the car immediately, inviting DJ to come with him to make sure he does so.
"Do you work out of Carmarthen Central station?"
As they leave the Deri, Dylan asks, “Do you work out of Carmarthen Central police station?”
No point in that whisky going to waste
and Garry is about to drink the glass of whisky.
A visitor arrives in Mathew's room
Mathew realises that someone has arrived in his hospital room;  it is Gerwyn, who thanks Mathew for letting him visit.
"It's a bit awkward – we haven't told Tesni"
“Jac and I are sorry we haven’t been before now – it’s a bit awkward – we haven’t told Tesni.”
Mathew replies that she texted him this morning;
"I haven't answered – I didn't know what to say"
“She didn’t have a signal until then – I haven’t answered – I didn’t know what to say.   She obviously didn’t know about the attack.”
"We want to tell her when she comes back"
Gerwyn asks if he will not contact her until she comes back from her course, as they want to tell her face to face, and it is going to be a big shock for her.   Mathew confirms that he has no intention of contacting her;
"She won't want to go out with me looking like this!"
“She won’t want to go out with me looking like this!”
Dylan takes DJ to Tapas
DJ and Dylan arrive at Tapas, and Dylan invites him to take a seat;  “I’ll get you something to eat to thank you,” he says.
"I'm starving, if you're offering food"
Someone else, Daf, has entered just behind them, and comments that he is also starving, if Dylan is offering some food.
"I wasn't expecting to see you until the end of the week"
“I wasn’t expecting to see you until the end of the week,” comments Dylan, but Daf says that he was in the area and thought he would pop in for a progress report.
“Anyway, a little bird told me you’re not taking our latest agreement seriously,” he adds, explaining to DJ that he is one of Dylan’s suppliers,
"Is it all right if I join you?"
and would like to join him at the table;
"Yes, drink coming up"
he asks Dylan for a drink.
"No luck, Diane!"
At Llwyncelyn, Dai has been trying to find someone to work at APD, but without success;  Diane suggests the boy who came in with his CV last month.
"Nefi wen!   He doesn't know how to lace up his shoes!"
Dai explodes, “What, Rowland’s son?   Nefi wen!   He doesn’t know how to lace his shoes, let alone mix cement!”
He continues, “You never know – Mathew might be back in work next week,”
"Don't be so stupid, Dai!"
but Diane tells him not to be so stupid, and not to put pressure on him to come back, either.   “What are we going to do, then?
"When Jason was gallivanting in Australia"
“We had trouble finding cover for Jason when he was gallivanting in Australia!   Do you know what?
"I don't think I want to do this any more!"
“I don’t think I want to do this any more!”
Diane urges him not to be so dramatic, but he maintains, “Its playing havoc with my stress levels, worrying all the time, looking for cover every so often –
"I'd be happy to stop everything"
“I’m telling you, I’d be happy to stop everything, and have someone else run the business.”
"How about John's son, Rhodri?"
Diane has an idea;  “How about John’s son?   Rhodri, is it?   He might be looking for more work.”
"A cup of tea and a cream horn"
Dai ignores her and continues to imagine that, if they were not working;  “We could be sitting here, feet up, with a cup of tea and a cream horn, watching the television – ‘Homes Under the Hammer’ or ‘Prynhawn Da’  [Good Afternoon].   Or we could go to a restaurant –
"Going from one Gastro Pub to another"
“we could travel the country, going from one Gastro Pub to another.”
"That's retirement, and it's not as nice as you think"
Diane points out to him, “That’s retirement, and it’s not as nice as you think – I’ve tried it.”
"But we could do things together"
He argues that if they both did it, they could do things together.   There are so many things he wants to do with Diane before it is too late;  he reminds her that they are not getting any younger.   “Look at poor Jim – he worked until the last second, almost – I don’t want that to happen to us!” he emphasises.
"It's something to think about – but not now"
Diane concedes that it is something to think about, but not now, as they need to find cover for Mathew.
"How I supply you with stuff and you distribute it"
Dylan serves Daf and DJ with food, and Daf says he has been explaining everything to DJ;  “How I supply you with stuff and you distribute it – and how things have been going wrong lately.”
"What is it that you supply?"
DJ comments that he did not say what it was that he supplies, and is told, “Prawns!”
"I've got something to speak to you about"
Dylan has something he would like to speak to Daf about;  he says that it was nice to meet officer DJ, who might as well have his food.
DJ is very pleased to have a double helping
DJ is pleased that now he has been left with two meals to eat.
"What are you doing here?"
Dylan demands what Daf is doing there;  “Just trying to make you realise you won’t get away with not paying,” is the reply.   He is emphatically told once again that he will get his money.
"I know you haven't put any houses on the market"
“I know you haven’t put any of those houses on the market, or told the tenants that they have to move out,” Daf reveals, “I also tried to send you a message on Monday, showing you how serious this debt is.
"Unfortunately, the acid was thrown on the wrong person"
“Unfortunately, the acid was thrown on the wrong person.”
"So it was you!"
Dylan realises it was he who attacked Mathew, but Daf informs him, “Not me personally, but I do regret not doing it myself –
"I wouldn't have made a mistake!"
“I wouldn’t have made a mistake!”
"So I was the target"
“So I was the target,” Dylan says, but then is informed that it was Guto;  Dylan is warned not to play games.
"I'll go through your family, one by one"
“If you haven’t paid in full by the end of the week, I’ll go through your family one by one – until I get the money!   It would be a shame if Tesni got scars to match her boyfriend,” Daf threatens.
Dylan appears to be in rather a large hole
He turns and walks out of Tapas, leaving Dylan somewhat disconcerted.
"I never thought I'd be so grateful to Chris Jones"
At last, Dai has managed to find someone;  “I never thought I’d be so grateful to Chris Jones!” he exclaims, and Diane says that he will have to work full pelt to finish the old Chapel in time.   He is confident that it will be full speed ahead tomorrow;  “But I don’t want to discuss work – I’m going to enjoy myself here.”
"Jason will be over the moon to take over APD"
Diane pours out the tea as she remarks, “Jason will be over the moon to take APD over from you,”
"Hang on – I've got a son as well"
but he tells her to hang on a moment, reminding her that he has a son as well.
“I don’t think DJ would be very happy farming and selling chips for the rest of his life,” he says.
"DJ wouldn't want to be a builder"
Diane does not think that DJ would want to be a builder,
"He can do the selling and supervising"
but Dai insists he could do the selling and supervising, as Jason hates paperwork,
"Are you 'on board' with the idea?"
and believes that he has now persuaded Diane to be ‘on board’ with this retirement business.
"I'm 'on board' with looking into the possibility"
She replies that she is ‘on board’ with looking into that possibility,
"On the beach with a jug of Sangria"
and Dai dreams of them both on a beach in the South of Spain.   “A jug of Sangria each, while the boys are here working hard – one doing the paperwork and one doing the manual labour.   It’s something to be proud of – leaving a successful business like APD to the boys –
"We can be very proud of that"
“we can be very proud of that.”
"But we won't tell them anything yet"
Diane insists, “We will not tell them anything yet – it will be a nice surprise when we’ve sorted things out.”   Dai will look into their pension pots and will put together a package for the boys;
Dai gets stuck into the cream horn
“Then it will be ta-ta, APD, and hello hols!” he says, gleefully biting into his cream horn.
"Why haven't you reopened the garage?"
When Gerwyn comes into the Deri, Garry angrily demands why he has not reopened the garage;
"I went to see Mathew"
Gerwyn explains that he went to see Mathew, who is not in a good place.   “He said he doesn’t want Tesni to see him – and I didn’t know what to say.   It will take a lot for him to get over this.”
"Everyone gets what they deserve"
Garry remarks that everyone gets what they deserve, and Gerwyn admonishes him, “Come on, Garry – I know Matthew isn’t your favourite person, but I don’t know how Tesni will cope, and Guto’s in a terrible state.”
"We'll forget about the garage for today"
In a sudden change of mind, Garry says that they can forget about the garage for today, putting down on the bar a bottle and two glasses.
Dylan is desperate for some quick cash
In the café flat, Dylan is arranging to sell one of his properties for £75,000, and stresses that he wants to sell it quickly.   He wants it sorted out as soon as possible, and at that moment Sara returns.
Sara is not happy, as the house viewing did not happen
He asks if she has seen his phone charger, and she appears to be in a very bad mood;
"Sorry – I was with Jaclyn"
she does not want to hear any more of his pre-prepared excuses, but he argues that he was with Jaclyn, stressing how this business with Mathew is going to affect Tesni.
"You told me that Ifan and I are your priorities now!"
“You told me this morning that Ifan and I are your priorities now!” she snarls, and he points out how demanding Jaclyn can be.
"I've been a pushover for too long!"
Her response is, “I’ve had enough – I’ve been a pushover for too long!”
He wonders if she is saying she does not want them to be together;
"If that's how you feel – fine!"
“If that’s how you feel – fine!” he tells her, and leaves the flat.
"Did you arrest him for crimes against hairstyles?"
Dai is doing the washing up when DJ returns home;  “What happened to you after you left the Deri?” he asks, “Did you arrest Dylan for crimes against hairstyles?”   DJ is unable to discuss it with him,
"Listen here, Starsky!"
so Dai goes on, “Listen here, Starsky, take a word of advice from your father – the next time you arrest someone, don’t do it publicly in the Deri.”
"He was only parked illegally"
"Don't say you took part in some police brutality?"
It is explained to him that no-one was arrested, as he was only parked illegally;  DJ gave him a warning and he moved the car.   “So why do you look as if the world has ended?” enquires Dai,
"Don't say you took part in some police brutality?"
“Don’t say you took part in some police brutality?”
DJ advises that Dylan took him to Tapas and gave him some free food, but looking back, it  could be construed as a bribe.
"Bobbies have been doing that for years – perks of the job!"
His father tells him not to be so silly, as it is voluntary work;  “And bobbies have been doing that for years – perks of the job!”
"I've let myself down!"
DJ groans that the guidelines are clear, and considers he has let himself down;  “Look at me – labouring, serving chips – and now one of my best friends has been attacked on my patch, and I can’t do anything about it.   I’m no use to anyone!”
"Listen – not a word to Diane or Jason"
Dai points out that he is feeling down in the dumps because of what happened to Mathew;  “You have to stop talking yourself down.   Listen, I’ve got something to tell you that might cheer you up – but not a word to Diane or Jason.
"We're giving APD to you and Jason"
“Diane and I are planning to retire, so that we can spend more time together before we get too old.   What it means is we will be giving the business – APD – to you and Jason.”
DJ cannot believe it . . .
DJ cannot believe this,
. . . but is assured that it is true
but is assured that it is true, so brightens up considerably.
Sara has collected Ifan from Elinor's
Dylan is hanging around in the back street when Sara comes out of Elinor’s house with Ifan;
"Sorry for overreacting earlier"
she comes across to apologise to him.   “Sorry for overreacting earlier – I know Jaclyn can be demanding – can we just pretend that it never happened?”
"We'll go and look for a house tomorrow"
He promises that they will go and look for a house tomorrow.
Dylan is obviously looking out for something
She can see that he is looking rather flustered, and keeps looking behind him;  he says that he needs to sort something out and then will come to the flat.
"Dylan's told me a lot about you"
Daf turns up again and introduces himself to Sara;  “Dylan’s told me a lot about you – and I met this young man, Ifan, when I was at the park with Dylan.”
"I'll have £75,000 for you by tomorrow night . . ."
While Sara takes Ifan back to the flat, the two men talk to each other.   “I’ve sold a house, and I’ll have £75,000 by tomorrow night –
". . . then we'll be quits!"
“we shall be  quits then.”
"I think another £50,000 should cover it"
Daf informs him that it is not quite as easy as that;  “A lot of people have missed out on wages because you lost the drugs – I think another £50,000 should cover it.”
"You're not serious?"
Dylan laughs, not believing that he is serious,
"Look after that little family of yours"
but Daf chillingly replies, “I am – look after that little family of yours,” and walks away,
How will Dylan extricate himself from this?
leaving Dylan in another awkward situation.
