10 June 2025

Ffion has had an eventful night . . .

Ffion is lying in bed, finally sleeping, when Jinx knocks on her bedroom door and shouts her name;

. . . and Jinx is worried about her

as there is no reply, he comes into the room and tries to wake her.

"Where am I?"

She mumbles, “Where am I?”

"You called me every name under the sun!

He tells her, “There’s something wrong – you’ve been up half the night, shouting in your sleep – and you’ve thrown up.   You called me every name under the sun!”

"I can't be too ill, then"

She sarcastically replies that she cannot be too ill in that case,

"You're going to the doctor's this afternoon"

but he is insistent that he is making a doctor’s appointment for her this afternoon.   Once again, she insists that she is fine;

"The doctor said it would take time"

“The doctor said it would take time to get better,” but she is reminded that he did not say anything about episodes like this, which must have been caused by her latest trip to the village.

"Gaynor's coming to sit with you"

He announces that Gaynor is coming to sit with her for a while;

"I'm only trying to help you"

“I’m only trying to help you – stay in bed this morning, all right – I’ll be back to take you to the doctor later.”

"You're not leaving for work?"

Sioned has just entrusted the twins to her mother and warns them to behave themselves;  she is disappointed to see that Mathew is about to leave for work.   “I need to check the chapel in Ammanford,” he tells her.

"I thought Howard was doing that"

“I thought Howard was doing that,” she replies, and he explains that is why he needs to check it.   “I hope there’s nothing wrong,” he adds and she confirms that there is nothing wrong,

"Can't you go to Ammanford tomorrow?"

but she just thought perhaps they could spend the day together.   “Can’t you go to Ammanford tomorrow?”

"I could finish work early"

He points out that the APD interviews are tomorrow, “But I could finish work early tonight.”   Sioned complains that Howard will be there tonight, so he suggests, “Why don’t we go out for a meal, then?   Just the two of us.”

Their peace does not last long

Sioned says that sounds lovely;  she will ask her mother to have Jac and Lili overnight.   He is in favour of them spending the entire night together, but this tender moment is rudely interrupted by the arrival of Ieuan Griffiths.

"Perhaps you should sit down"

“I’m glad I caught you before you left – perhaps you should sit down,” he begins;

"Is this about Anita?"

Mathew wonders what this is all about, coming to the conclusion that Anita has found out.   “No, it’s nothing to do with APD,” Ieuan continues, “I wasn’t sure how you would react – that’s why I wanted to see you here.

"Your mother's trying to get into contact with you"

“It’s your mother – I got a message from her – she’s trying to get in touch with you.”

Mathew does not reply

Mathew says nothing.

"What subject is it today?"

Gwern is once more at Llwyncelyn, for some more tuition and Tom asks him what subject it is today;  when told that it is maths, he comments that Gwern does not sound too happy about it.

"I'm having trouble with online banking"

Gaynor comes into the room, hanging on the phone;  of course, Tom wants to know to whom she is talking.   She informs him that it is the bank, as she is having trouble with the online banking.

"I've been on hold for half an hour"

“I’ve been trying to pay the fine I got in court, but I’ve been on hold for half an hour and I need to pay it today.”

Tom replies that she will have to go to the bank instead, but she protests that she cannot, as she has a lesson with Gwern and also has promised to sit with Ffion before she goes to see the doctor.

"A doctor?"

Tom is immediately concerned at the mention of a doctor.

“She’s been ill and Jinx is worried about her,” she explains.   Tom takes charge, asking Gwern to come back later as something has come up,

"OK, that's fine"

to which he promptly agrees.

"I'll go to Ffion's in your place"

Then Tom proposes to go and sit with Ffion in Gaynor’s place while she goes to the bank, insisting that it is important that she sorts the matter out.   He will be in the area anyway with his work.   She is very happy about this and he will phone for a taxi for her.

"I don't know what I'd do without you"

“Do you know what?   I don’t know what I do without you,” she says.   He points out that he could have talked to the bank for her,

"That would be too much of a commitment for you"

“But we have not got a joint bank account,” putting the idea into her head;  “That would be too much of a commitment for you, probably,” he adds,

His words have the intended result

so she feels guilty, as intended.

"I told you to block her!"

Mathew is becoming very heated;  “I told you to block her!” and Sioned cannot understand why Ieuan has been talking to Mathew’s mother.

"How many times do I have to tell you?"

“Exactly!   How many times do I have to tell you to stop contacting her?” Mathew shouts.

Ieuan tries to explain, “Melfa’s got something important to tell you,” but Mathew does not want to hear it;

"Stop doing her dirty work for her!"

he tells Ieuan to go and stop doing his mother’s dirty work for her.

Ieuan leaves the farm

Ieuan sadly complies with this order.

Apêl Maenan has been boarded up . . .

Kelly walks across the road towards the brewery and we see that in the background the boarded up former Apêl Maenan shop now bears the graffiti, ‘Quantum Hydro Jerks’,

. . . and has acquired some graffiti

which she assumes is Rhys’ handiwork.   “Someone’s been using a rhyming dictionary,” she remarks.

"Dad won;'t be happy when he sees that"

Rhys predicts that his father will not be happy when he sees that;

"Serves him right for chucking Megan out!"

Kelly’s reaction is, “No offence, like – but it serves him right for chucking Megan out of the shop!   Anyway, I’m glad I’ve caught you – we need to sort out the carnival, or it’ll be Christmas Eve before we know it.”

"We're definitely doing it, then?"

Rhys unenthusiastically comments, “We’re definitely doing it, then?”

"Yes, we definitely are"

She confirms that they are, but first she thinks that they should do some market research.

Kelly goes to do her market research

She sees a couple of people heading for the Deri and  straightway goes to ask them a few questions.

"I'm not good enough, am I?"

Tom is once more at Deri Fawr, where Ffion was expecting Gaynor;  “Oh, I’m not good enough, am I?” he wonders.   She is pleased to see him and offers him a cup of tea, but he maintains that she is looking pale.

"I'm a lot better than I was last night"

“I’m a lot better than I was last night, believe it or not – it was all of a sudden, just when I thought I was getting better.”

"I hope my soup was not to blame"

Tom hopes that his soup was not to blame, but she dismisses such a fanciful suggestion.

"Trauma can do strange things"

He goes on to point out that trauma can do strange things and it will take time to get better, especially after what she has been through.   Ffion is aware of that and has tried to tell Jinx, “But he insists that I should see a doctor today.”

Tom hopes that they say something sensible instead of repeating things that she already knows.

"I would prefer some fresh air and a walk"

“I would prefer some fresh air and a walk to staring at these four walls,” she moans, so he encourages her to do exactly that,

"But Jinx won't let me"

but she replies that Jinx we will not let her.

"He has no right to stop you"

“He has no right to stop you!” Tom stresses, but Ffion understands that he does not want her to go too far up on her own.   “You don’t have to go on your own,” Tom points out,

"I'll go and get my coat"

at which Ffion smiles and she goes to get her coat.

He picks up Ffion's phone . . .

While she is upstairs, he picks up her phone which is lying nearby

. . . and ponders his next move

and debates what he will do next.

"Are you keen, Ieuan?"

Kelly has gone to APD and asks Ieuan, “Are you keen?”   He agrees that he will do anything for Anita.

"Have you thought of competitions?"

He enquires whether she has thought about arranging competitions;  “You know – jam, chutney, flower arranging – ooh, I know – largest vegetables!

"I saw a huge carrot at a carnival!"

“I saw a huge carrot at a carnival in the Cross Hands area once.   You could have made Sunday dinner for the whole village with it.”

Kelly finds this rather eccentric

Kelly seems to regard this as a rather strange idea, but Ieuan volunteers to be the judge;  “I’ve experience of doing things like that, as a councillor.”

"Do you have big carrots at Penrhewl?"

Sioned comes into the shop, so he asks her, “Do you have big carrots at Penrhewl?”

"What's he on about?"

and she looks at him with a blank expression.

"Any excuse to dress the kids up!"

Kelly explains that she and Reese are thinking of organising a carnival;  “Any excuse to dress the kids up!” she answers.

Kelly will go to the Deri and Tamed

Kelly will go to the Deri and Tamed to spread the word,

"I'll get Mam's help"

while Sioned intends to talk to her mother to obtain Cae Glas’ help.

"Mathew's still in Ammanford"

Sioned is told that Mathew is still in Ammanford,

"I've come to see you"

but she has actually come to see Ieuan.

There is no sign of Ffion . . .

Later, Jinx knocks on Ffion’s bedroom door, then finds that she is not there;

. . . so Jinx calls her phone . . .

his first reaction is to get out his phone and ring her number.

. . . which he can hear downstairs . . .

He is very surprised to hear the phone ringing downstairs, so he searches

. . . hidden under a cushion

and discovers it under a cushion in a chair.   He is becoming very frustrated.

Walking by the river

Ffion and Tom are out walking by the river as she sighs, “This is what I needed,” and Tom agrees that she knows best what she wants, not Jinx.

"I feel much better than I did first thing"

“I feel much better than I did first thing,” she goes on

"It takes time to get better"

and once more Tom repeats that it takes time to get better.

"It's these thoughts that are making me ill"

“It’s these thoughts that are making me ill – I feel like I remember one small thing every now and again – yet the whole thing is still so unclear.   It’s nothing definite – just . . .”

"Sometimes the mind can get stuck on one thing"

He tries to convince her that sometimes the mind can get stuck on one specific thing;

"I was the same when Cheryl attacked me"

“I was the same when Cheryl attacked me – I was sure I’d seen these things, but it was the knock that was complicating things in my head.”

"That's probably happening to me"

“That’s probably what’s happening to me,” she groans.   He maintains that he does not want to put a dampener on things,

"I'm just so desperate to know what happened"

but she sighs, “I’m just so desperate to know what happened, Tom!”

"You might remember one day"

He tells her that she might remember, one day, but should not put too much pressure on herself.

He emphasises, as he has said before, that getting better is the important thing now and that she should concentrate on that, as no one wants to see her get ill again.

Ffion is reduced to tears

By now, she is in tears.

In the brewery, Gwern asks, “It won’t just be something for kids, will it?   Dressing up and face painting?”

"There will be something for everyone"

but Rhys insists that there will be something for everyone.

"Everyone's looking forward to it"

Kelly approaches, enquiring if they are talking about the carnival;  she is told that Gwern is looking forward to it.   “Everyone is!” She enthuses, “Especially the competitions, floats, face paints and fancy dress.”

"I'll think about it"

Gwern’s reaction is that he will think about it and Rhys tells Kelly that Gwern thinks it is not ‘cool’.

"Perhaps we should involve him"

“Perhaps we should involve him in the organising – or someone else who’s young.”

Rhys demands what she is trying to say.

"Gen Z, I mean"

“Gen Z, I mean – according to my market research, everyone’s enthusiastic – loads of ideas, businesses want to give prizes – Griffiths wants to judge everything!”

"Everyone is keen"

Rhys admits that everyone he has spoken to have been keen as well, but he reminds her that it will be a lot of work,

"It will take more than two of us"

so she imagines that they will need more than the two of them to organise it – but they do not want to open it up to everyone.

She suggests that perhaps they need some kind of committee,

"There's a committee for everything in this place!"

but Rhys rejects that, pointing out, “There’s a committee for everything in this place!”

"I was trying to lighten the load, like "

She says, "I was simply trying to lighten the load, like."

"Sorry I got upset"

By the waterside, Tom and Ffion sit on a handily positioned bench and she apologises for getting upset earlier;

"I'm sorry if I upset you"

he is sorry if it was he who upset her.

"Everything is catching up with me"

“Everything is catching up with me,” she groans, then realises that she does not have her phone and so does not know what time it is.

Tom replies that it is just after five, so she sighs that she has missed the doctors appointment – which was the whole reason he dragged her there in the first place,

but he does pretend to be sorry about that.

:I should have kept an eye on the time"

She blames herself for not keeping an eye on the time – and now is not convinced that she needed the appointment anyway.

"A bit of fresh air and a sensible chat"

“This is what I needed, I think – a bit of fresh air and a sensible chat with someone, because that's what's going to help me get better.”

"I'm more than willing to listen"

He stresses that he is more than happy to listen and try to understand any time.

“Seriously, if you feel you’re starting to remember anything else, or something’s worrying you, phone me immediately.

"I'm cheaper than a hypnotherapist"

I’m cheaper than a hypnotherapist!”

"Fancy a bottle of wine?"

As they sit in the Deri, Mathew asks Sioned if she fancies a bottle of wine;  she considers that rather too much so they settle on a couple of glasses.   “I thought you’d want a pint,” she says, but he maintains that tonight is special and it is about time they had a night out together, just the two of them.

"Can we have a quick chat?"

However, before he goes to the bar, Sioned would like to have a quick chat about this morning.

"I'm sorry you had to see that"

“I’m sorry you had to see that this morning, but this isn’t the first time Griffiths has tried to contact my mother,” he apologises.

"I've been speaking to Griffiths"

Sioned already knows this as she has been speaking to Griffiths;  “I don’t know exactly what happened with your mother,

"She has a good reason for trying to contact you . . ."

“but I know things aren’t right between you.   She has a good reason for trying to contact you this time – I’m so sorry,

". . . your grandfather has died"

“but your grandfather has died and your mother wants to know if you would be willing to go to the funeral with her next week.”

Mathew does not reply

Mathew does not say anything.

Jinx is trying to find Ffion . . .

Jinx is on the phone to Hywel;  “If you see her, just phone me,”

. . . but then she walks in

but at that moment Ffion returns to Deri Fawr.

"Where have you been?"

“Where have you been?   You’ve missed the appointment now!” he complains.

"I shall have to rearrange now"

She replies that she is sorry and he insists that he will have to phone tomorrow morning to rearrange,

"There's no need"

but she says that there is no need.   He is adamant that there is good reason, demanding where she has been

"And why don't you have your phone?"

and why she do not have her phone.

“Just for a walk,” and he imagines that it was with Gaynor, who should have known Ffion had an appointment.

"I just needed some fresh air"

“No, Gaynor didn’t come – I went on my own – but I’m fine, I just needed some fresh air.”

"A bit of fresh air and you're fine!"

“Oh yes – a bit of fresh air and you’re fine!” he taunts her.   She appreciates that he is worried about her, but wants him to give her some freedom, as she feels so much better now than she did.   “But what if you get ill again?”

"If I do, I'll go to the doctor"

She agrees that, if she does, she will go to the doctor, but demands that he leave it for now, promising that she is better;  “To be honest, I haven’t felt this well for a long time.”

"There's something she's not telling me"

Jinx is certain that she is withholding something from him.

Now Tom is doing the tuition

Gwern has been receiving help from Tom with his maths;  he is praised for doing this extra work, but Gwern points out that he has not yet  passed.   Tom is confident that he will

"Sorry – the bus took ages"

and at that moment Gaynor returns, reporting that the bus took ages.

Gwern explains that Tom has been helping him and gets out some money;

"We said £20 a session, din't we?"

“We said £20 a session, didn’t we?”

"You're being paid?"

Tom makes a great show of complaining that Gaynor was being paid by Gwern,

"Buy something for yourself when you pass the exam!"

who is told to keep his money and buy something for himself when he passes that exam tomorrow.

"I feel much more confident now"

Gwern tells her that he is much more confident now, both about the exam and the interview tomorrow at APD;  he leaves the house.

"Another appointment to open a joint account"

Gaynor thanks Tom for his help and has been thinking about what he said earlier about commitment;  “I’m not frightened of it, you know – and to prove that I’ve arranged another appointment at the bank, so we can open a joint account.”

"It's something, I suppose"

“Joint bank account?   It’s something, I suppose,” he mutters as he walks out of the room.

Ffion is reading . . .

Ffion is reading a book when she suddenly looks down at the floor and in her mind’s eye can see the forest floor, just before she was attacked.

. . . but then has a flashback . . .

She sits up in the chair,

. . . to finding that hair

sees her hand reaching down to touch something – which looks like human hair, then she flinches away.

She's not going to tell Tom, is she?

She immediately picks up her phone to make a call, but thankfully it is not to Tom;  “Hello, it’s Ffion Llywelyn –

"I'd like to talk to DS Thomas . . ."

“I’d like to talk to DS Thomas – can you ask her to call me back, then, please?

". . . I've remembered more about the attack"

I’ve remembered more about the attack.”

"You ought to go to the funeral, Math"

Ffion is trying to convince Mathew that he ought to go to the funeral, as he does not want to regret it,

"Is there room for two more?"

but at that moment, Rhys and Kelly come in, asking if there is room for two more, so the moment is gone.

"We're thinking of having a procession down the High Street"

“All right, or what?” says Kelly, “Did you tell him about the carnival?”   Rhys add that their help is required.   “We’re thinking of having a procession down the High Street,” Kelly enthusiastically goes on.

"Now is not a good time, Kelly"

She is told by Sioned that now is not a good time, as Matthew has had some bad news;  “His grandfather has died,” she explains.

"Sorry to hear that, Mathew"

Both Kelly and Rhys are very sorry;  “I’m an idiot, going on and on about the carnival – sorry to hear that,” says Kelly.

"I don't remember the bloke"

“I don’t need sympathy,” Mathew tells her, “I don’t remember the bloke.”

"It's hard, losing someone int the family"

Rhys appreciates that it is hard losing someone in the family, but Mathew explains that he hardly knew his grandfather.

"It's an excuse for Mam to get in touch"

“This is an excuse for Mam to try and get in touch again – you don’t know her, Sioned.

"She's a self-righteous little whore!"

“She’s a self-righteous little whore!”  [rendered by the subtitlers as ‘a selfish cow’]

That surprises Kelly

This causes some raised eyebrows for Kelly, as he continues, “She left me when I was six years old – what does she expect?   Sympathy,  because her father has died?

"She wants to show that I've forgiven her – but I haven't!"

“Or perhaps she just wants me to stand beside her at the funeral to show the family that I’ve forgiven her – but I haven’t.

"Tell Griffiths to send a message to his best friend . . ."

“You can tell Griffiths to send a message back to his best friend on Facebook to say I’m not going to the funeral –

"I never want to hear Melfa's name again – understand?"

“and I never want to hear Melfa’s name again, understand?”

Sioned is stunned

He gets up from his seat and walks out, as the three of them sit in a state of shock.
