Anita is escorted past number 9

A fire engine is parked outside Bethania and smoke is still coming out of number 9 as Anita is escorted past the scene by a police officer, before taking her place behind the police tape.

"They think someone is in there"

Dani approaches and demands what has happened;  “Why is it on fire?   The place is empty,” but is told by Anita that they think someone is in there.   “I’m going to phone Mark and Gwern,” says Dani, 

"I can't find my phone!"

then comes to the realisation, “I can’t find my phone – can you phone him?”

Jason comes to investigate

At the other end of the street, by the Deri, Jason gets out of the APD van and wonders what is happening;  

"Mark said there was a fire"

he shouts, “Dani, Mark said there was a fire next door to you.”   He confirms that Mark is OK, but Gwern is not with him;  “I’m sure that he’s fine,” he adds.

"They don't think anyone is hurt"

Anita informs him that they do not think anyone is hurt, but that there is someone in there;  

"I'm worried that Jinx is in there"

“I’m worried Jinx is in there, because I heard he had the keys.”

DS Fielding is in charge

A police car, with siren blaring, arrives and DS Fielding gets out;  Maya interrupts to tell Anita and Dani, “I just overheard there’s two people upstairs – a man and a woman.   

"Perhaps Jinx has a fancy woman"

“Perhaps Jinx has a fancy woman!”   Jason reprimands her that this is not the time for gossip.

Dani just wants everyone to be OK 

Jinx emerges from the house . . .

and at that moment Jinx is brought out of the house, merely suffering from smoke inhalation, 

. . . followed by Kelly

but following him is Kelly, who looks across with anguish at Jason.

"Are you OK, Kelly?"

Anita asks if she is OK, 

Jason shakes his head and walks away . . .

but Jason, who is looking incredulous, simply shakes his head and walks away.   

. . . which causes Kelly great concern

Kelly looks absolutely devastated.

Ffion has come round by the time Siôn arrives

In the field where Ffion’s car has come to rest, she is now conscious, when Siôn arrives in his car;  

"Are you all right?"

“I came as quickly as I could – are you all right?” he says, and Arwen confirms that she managed to stop the car.

"Sorry that Arwen phoned you"

Ffion insists that she is fine and is sorry that Arwen phoned him;  “I didn’t know who else to phone,” protests Arwen, “You usually come round straightaway, but it was ages this time!”

Ffion still maintains that she is all right now, but she no longer intends to drive to London.   

"Did you drive through the village?"

Arwen asks if Siôn drove through the village, as she is worried about Gwern and they need to check on him.   

The car will be left there for now

The car will be all right left in the field, and Siôn will take them back to Y Felin with him, as he wants to talk to Ffion.   Arwen however is very anxious to see Gwern.

"It's such a relief that no-one was hurt"

A police officer is removing the tape from across the road and Maya considers it a relief that nobody was hurt.   

Gwern comes through the alley

Then Dani sees Gwern coming out of the alley.

"What were you and Kelly doing upstairs?"

Anita asks the obvious question, “Jinx, what were you and Kelly doing upstairs, then?”   He says that they were just having a look at the place;  

"I wanted to know how much need spending on it"

he wanted to know how much needed to be spent on it.   The Fire Brigade are not sure what started the fire, 

"They suspect arson"

but suspect that it was started intentionally – arson.

"I'm going home"

Gwern says that he is going home, but is intercepted by DS Fielding;  

"Gwern, can I have a word, please?"

“Gwern, can I have a word, please?   It’s important.”   Dani goes across to see what is happening.   “Did you have anything to do with this?” the DS asks, 

"We have reason to believe hyoid were responsible"

“We have reason to believe that you were responsible.”

"How did you know"

He asks how they knew and is told that they have had a tipoff.   “Please say this isn’t true,” begs Dani.

Arwen is along the street . . .

As Arwen comes around the corner by the fire engine, the DS continues, “Gwern Monk, I’m arresting you on suspicion of attempted murder.   You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court.”

. . . so Gwern puts two and two together

Gwern looks at Arwen and he realises that she was the source of the tipoff.

When they arrive back at Y Felin, Ffion demands why Siôn has brought her there rather than going home.   

"Sit down, Ffion"

He tells her to sit down and she continues, “I don’t understand all this fuss – I’m completely fine!”

"Are you supposed to be driving that car?"

“Yes – at the moment – are you supposed to be driving that car?”   From her lack of response, he assumes that she is not.   

"I haven't had a blackout for ages"

She maintains that she knows it was irresponsible, but she has not had a blackout for ages and wanted to do something nice for Arwen.

"There's a state less than half an hour away"

“Ffion, there’s a station less than half an hour away,” Siôn reminds her, but she argues that no-one has been hurt, which is the important thing.   “Luckily!” he snaps, 

"Have you been drinking again?"

“Tell me – have you been drinking again?   I have to ask to make sure my grand-daughter is safe.   

The headteacher has her car confiscated

“I’m going to keep these keys – Iolo and I will get your car and park it outside.   You’ll get it back when we know you’re safe to drive again.   The appointment with the specialist is in two days, isn’t it?”

"You're treating me like a child, Siôn!"

She protests that he is treating her like a child, but he is adamant;  

"I'd never forgive myself!"

“Sorry, but I’d never forgive myself if something happened to Arwen because you’ve been so stupid!”   Ffion turns and angrily storms out of the house.

Kelly returns to Bryntirion 

Jason is sitting solemnly on the sofa when Kelly comes into Bryntirion;  at first she does not know what to say.   

"I really don't want to have this chat"

“I really don’t want to have this chat,” she begins 

"I think we've been avoiding this chat for a while"

and Jason thinks that they have been avoiding this chat for a while.

"I know it looks dodgy"

“Whatever you and the rest of the village saw – I know it looked dodgy – but I swear I’m not having a seedy affair.   

"Something happened – once"

“But something has happened – once – I promise.”   

Jason walks away from her

He gets up and walks into the kitchen as she tries to hold his hand.   

"Come and sit down, Kelly"

They look at each other and he tells her to come and sit down.

Anita is calming herself down

Anita is sitting in the Deri in a state of shock when Siôn comes in and asks what all the fuss is about out there.   

They have a rapid turnover of staff in the Deri

There appears to be yet another barman in the Deri.   

"We've all had. a shock, you know" 

“We’ve all had a  shock, you know!” says Anita.

"I'm worried sick about you, D"

A short distance away, Maya is speaking to Delyth on the phone;  “If Gwern can set fire to a house, he wouldn’t bat an eyelid about shopping you for hiding you know what,” she snarls, “I’m worried sick about you, D – call me back as soon as you get this.”

"She's in her room

Ffion arrives back at Cysgod y Glyn, where Jinx tells her that Arwen is in her room;  “I haven’t spoken to her – she went straight there – I thought you were going to London.”   

"It's a long story, Jinx"

She replies that it is long story and wants to know what happened in Gwyneth’s house.

They think Gwern tried to kill me and Kelly"

“Well, they think that Gwern tried to kill me and Kelly – he set the place on fire while we were in there.   Now they’ve arrested Gwern.”   Ffion is so sorry, explaining that Arwen warned her and that they tried to get back to the village.

"Then I had another blackout"

“I told Arwen to phone the police just in case – but then I had another blackout – I didn’t think Gwern would actually do it – I thought he was just trying to frighten Arwen.”   

"I'm very grateful you did tell her"

Jinx is very grateful that she did tell Arwen to phone the police, adding that Kelly was upstairs with him.   

"You and Kelly?"

This naturally raises Ffion’s suspicions.

"I bumped into him on Christmas Day"

Jason sits in the kitchen as Kelly tells him, “I bumped into him on Christmas Day – you’d proposed, Dai and Diane were back – I found out you were sending money to Sara behind my back.”   

"So you're saying it was my fault?"

He thinks she is saying it is his fault, but she goes on, “I didn’t say that, OK?   I know you did it for the right reasons, 

"It hurt and I was angry"

“but it hurt and I was angry.”

"And that's why you ran to him"

“And that’s why you ran to him,” says Jason.   She emphasises that she did not run to him, she simply bumped into him, and told him. 

"We were working together . . . and . . ."

“And I guess we were spending time together in the Pizza Place – we were working together – and the ‘Mari Lwyd’, I guess, and the Sunday School club.”

"You were with Jinx – I'll kill him!"

“That’s why you were late for the wedding, wasn’t it?   You were with him – you were with Jinx.   I’ll kill him!” Jason rages 

"No – Jason – stop!"

and there is nothing that Kelly can do to stop him leaving the house.

"Not much damage"

“How much damage is there?” asks Ffion, and Jinx replies that fortunately there is not much.   Getting rid of the smell will be the most difficult thing.   “I can’t believe Gwern would do that – he’s such a sweet boy,” she says.

"Before his life turned into a mess"

Jinx maintains that he was a sweet boy, “Before his life turned into a mess.”   Ffion doubts that Gwern would really try to kill him – there is a difference between arson and trying to kill someone.

"His mother did the same, didn't she?"

“The police seemed pretty sure – his mother did the same, didn’t she?   I feel sorry for him – he hasn’t got much of a chance, considering who his parents were.   I wonder how Arwen is now.”

"It's time I went to see Arwen"

Ffion thinks it is time she went to see her daughter;  

"I saw Gwern being arrested"

Arwen is in bed, looking at her phone, when her mother knocks on the door.   “I saw Gwern being arrested,” she groans.   Ffion says that Jinx wants to see her, and Arwen continues, “Is Gwern in trouble?”   

"It sure looks that way"

Her mother replies that it definitely looks that way, 

"I wish I hadn't phoned the police"

and Arwen wishes that she had not phoned the police.

“You did the right thing and I’m very proud of you,” stresses Ffion.  

"He will go to prison because of me"

 Arwen is afraid that he will go to prison because of her, 

"I could have been in hospital . . ."

and then Jinx comes in.

“I could have been in hospital now, if it wasn’t for you – I’m not sure if Gwern knew we were there – but thank you – 

". . . you saved my life today"

“you saved my life today!”

There is a loud knocking at the door and Jason’s voice can be heard shouting, “Jinx – are you up there?”   

Jason is bawling Jinx's name

He continues walking around the streets, shouting at the top of his voice for Jinx and tries the door of the Pizza Place.   

"I just want to talk to you, that's all"

“I just want to talk to you, that’s all!”

"Jason!"

Jinx emerges from Cysgod y Glyn 

"Here he is– my best man!"

and is greeted, “Ah, here he is – my best man!”   

"I know now why you left the stag early"

Jinx urges him to cool down and Kelly comes running along the street.   “I know now why you left the stag early – it makes sense now,” Jason snarls.

"When did you decide you wanted my wife?"

He tells Kelly that he wants to know what Jinx has to say;  “When was it, then, Jinx?   When you decided that we weren’t friends any more and that you wanted my wife?   Christmas Day?   I know she was with you that day – she told me.   Or when we were out choosing rings – a wedding ring, an engagement ring.”

Kelly is distraught

Kelly looks distraught 

"It's more complicated"

as Jinx tries to explain that it was more complicated.   “Are you in love with her?” Jason demands, 

"Do you love her?"

“Do you love her?”

"I did – but she wants to be with you"

“I did,” says Jinx, “But I’ve realised that she wants to be with you and I have accepted that – I’ve moved on.”   Jason does not for one moment believe that, and Jinx is sorry that he has been hurt.

Anita is listening in

Anita is approaching APD at that moment and listens to the argument;  Jinx stresses, “You have to believe me – the one time something happened in the Antur, she realised immediately it was you she wanted to be with.”

"You never wanted to marry me, did you?"

Jason turns to look at Kelly;  “The day you asked me to marry you, you’d been with him?   You never wanted to marry me, did you?”   

"That's not true, Jase"

Kelly protests that is not true, 

"You married me because you felt guilty"

but he is convinced, “You married me because you felt guilty,” and he walks away, as Kelly looks horrified.

"Let him go, Kelly"

Anita advises her to let him go, 

Kelly heads into APD

and Kelly follows her into APD.

"I tried phoning him"

“I’ve tried phoning him, but it’s not ringing,” Arwen tells her mother.   

"They will look for evidence on his phone"

It is predicted that the police have taken his phone to see if there is any evidence on it.   

"You must cut all ties with Gwern"

The most sensible thing that Arwen can do now is to cut all ties with Gwern.

"I should have told Jason straight"

Anita makes Kelly a cup of tea;  “I never thought I was capable of doing something like this – I should have told Jason straight after what happened in the Antur and let him decide whether he wanted to be with me.   

"There's nothing going on between Jinx and me"

“Auntie Neet, there’s nothing going on between Jinx and me.”

"You looked guilty"

It is obvious that Anita is having difficulty believing her;  “I saw your face, Kelly – you looked guilty.”   

"Do you think Jason and I should be together?"

Kelly is adamant that she is telling the truth;  “Is it supposed to be this difficult?   I mean, do you think that Jason and I should be together – 

"I doubt it sometimes"

“because truthfully, Auntie Neet, and you know this – I doubt it sometimes.”

"I felt the same when I was with Meic"


Anita confesses that she felt the same during the years she was with Meic;  “And even now with Ieuan.”   Kelly asks how she got Meic to forgive her – after the affair with Colin and everything else.

"If they're willing to work at it"

“Look, if two people really want the relationship to work, and they’re willing to work at it, it is possible,” she explains.

"Wish me luck, then"

“Wish me luck, then,” says Kelly as she leaves APD.   

"Let him calm down first'

She will not listen to Anita, who does not think it is a good idea to look for Jason;  she should let him calm down first.   

Kelly is determined . . .

Kelly shakes her head 

. . . and goes in search of Jason

and walks out.

"Did you speak to Gwern ?"

DS Fielding comes in into the pharmacy and has had a terrible day;  “Did you speak to Gwern?” Maya is anxious to learn, 

"You haven't been able to warn him!"

“So you haven’t been able to warn him not to mention the gun?”   

"If he'd been taught a lesson . . ."

Delyth realises now that she should never have let him get away with that; “If he’d been taught a lesson then, perhaps none of this would have happened.”   

"We must just cross our fingers, then"

Maya says that they must just cross their fingers that he does not drop Delyth in it.

The DS stresses that he nearly killed people today and then she notices Dani passing outside;  “I’m so sorry – I had no choice but to arrest him.   Is it tomorrow that you find out about bail?”   

"What are the chances of bail?"

Dani wonders what are the chances and is told that it is hard to say.

"With a crime this serious, I'm not sure"

“Generally, young people get bail, but with a crime this serious, I’m not so sure.

Kelly manages to find Jason . . .

When Kelly locates Jason, he is sitting disconsolately in the back street;  

. . . and comes to sit by him

she comes to sit next to him.   

"I'm terrified of losing you"

“I didn’t choose you because I felt guilty – and what happened in the Antur just made me realise how much I love you – I do love you, Jason – and I’m terrified of losing you.”

Jason is silent

Jason sits without a word 

"Tell me what to do, and I'll do it"

as she continues, “So just tell me what to do, and I’ll do it.”

"I'm sorry, but this marriage is over"

He sadly shakes his head;  “I’m sorry, but this marriage is over,” he says 

He has tears in his eyes

and walks away from Kelly along the street, wiping a tear from his eye as he goes.
